Welcome to all, for the 155th version of the Filefront Network Insider, although while normally released weekly this version covers the last two weeks of Gaming News, Mods and Files. While there has been a fair few new maps and lots of news for several sites, there has been less of the other sorts including Modifications, Skins and Mini Mods

Hopefully there will be a lot more in the coming week with many modifications that are coming through which are currently work in progress at the moment (hopefully some of these will come through next week!) and maybe more news about GTA V aside from the rumours that are floating around (there is even an Isle of Wright rumour for GTA as well, although I think rockstar will go for a bigger area some how!)

So as normal for the Network Insider we have listed all the major gaming happenings, the biggest modifications and files within the last week for you below. Remember; if you see something that you would like to be added to the Insider, or you have any suggestions that you think may improve the insider then simply drop us an E-Mail at The Insider, or email it to me at Danny[at]filefront[dot]com (please put "Insider" as the subject though smile ). Battle for Middle Earth 2: Battle for Acosa Mod -On Hold
The Battle for Acosa Mod by Ridder Blauw has been put on hold, the mod was looking very promising but as all modders its a tiring job that requires a lot of commitment. However, he's not retiring from the game, he's helping out another modder and hopefully we'll see him return soon. Here is his post:

After some time of working on my mod, I have decided I need to take a break from all these bears. I shall return to work on the BFA Mod when ready.
So don't expect updates for a while, cause they won't come untill I start working on then BFA Mod again.

Hopefully you will understand that. For when working on bears constantly, your mind starts going nuts from em. When this happens you start to hate working on em and thus making them of lower quality, so any work I do then is practically useless. Working on a mod alone (Man of Gondor is a trusted beta tester, he doesn't code or such things) is hard work and I simply can't force myself into working on the BFA Mod. I'm sorry Man of Gondor, but I promise you I will return to work on the BFA Mod. Therefore the mod is temporarily on hold.

Battle for Middle Earth: Massive Middle Earth Mod Update - Faramir Knight
Kwen has given us a great update on the new Faramir Knight skin that will be used in the Massive Middle Earth Mod, although this is only a beta skin and still has some work to do, but the skin does look pretty good, which you can see below.

Although I passed the mod command on to Spartan184 when I no longer wished to proceed with it, there have been a few things happening here and there on my part as well. Now Spartan184 has also lost interest in the mod, but not before finishing the Heroes, powers, and many bug kills. This is all thanks to him, and the other various people who helped him do so (I'm not sure who you are, so speak up, or I'll just have him send me a list for crediting.)

So basically the mod is ready for a beta. But, in my opinion I would call it more of an alpha, because content-wise it's still pretty basic. A lot has been done, but to the untrained eye, it looks like a slightly shinier version of vanilla BFME.

Battle for Middle Earth: The Dwarf Holds Upate - The Fortress of Erebor
This a massive update from Nertea regarding the Fortress of Erebor map made by Haldir for his Dwarf Holds mod, as many of you remember this mod was previously known as the Rhovanion Alliance Mod.

Here is the big update from Nertea: I've dedicated this entire update to showing off Haldir's awesome new Erebor map. We've worked quite a lot to bring this centrepiece map to life, and well... now I'll just give you some screenshots.

Battlefield 1942: Battlegroup42 1.7 Preview - New Army And New Maps
Yes, there's a new army in Battlegroup42: The Chinese National Revolutionary Army (NRA) ! It got the most votes during a poll on the Battlegroup42 website. In its creation we were able to use a freely available skin set from China and our forum member "Hong Kong Chinese Boy" recorded radio commands in Chinese language (Mandarin). We also have to thank our team member "Q" who did a lot of important research and translation work. The National Revolutionary Army was equipped with a mixture of German and Russian weapons of which most were already in the mod. A new addition is the Gewehr 98, the predecessor of the famous Karabiner k98, which was mass produced under license in the 1930's and was standard issue of the National Revolutionary Army. The model was created by Kraetzer and textured by our infantry weapon expert RuppDee.

One of the many conflicts which lead to World War II was Japan's invasion into China and the establishment of the Japanese puppet state Manchukuo in Manchuria which lead to border disputes with the Soviet Union. Yamamoto created three maps dealing with the most important battles. The series starts in June 1937 with the Kanchatzu incident. Kanchatzu is one of the islands in the river Amur, which at that time was the border between Manchukuo and the Soviet Union. When Japanese troops occupied the island, Soviet gun boats of the Amur-Flotilla attacked them to drive them off the island. One the boats was sunk, two others heavily damaged. Finally both sides withdrew from the island, but the incident increased the Anti-Japanese mood in China, which was also interested in this vicinity.

Well, I'm extremely pleased to give you a little sneak peek at it, but first a little history lesson. The X-Wing series of games was produced under license from LucasArts by Totally Games. Proving extremely popular, the series mixed flight simulator with Star Wars, producing one of the greatest Star Wars flying experiences. The series featured four games in total, two of which could be played online. The first of these, X-Wing Vs TIE Fighter, thrilled players of the day and a clan following soon built up, some of which still continue to play.

Elite Force 2: Decline in submissions and recent site problems
Hello there everyone! Just a quick note to explain whats been going on here over the past couple of weeks...

You may have noticed that Elite Force Files sort of blew up slightly: no images were displaying, all files from after March this year had vanished and users couldn't access Picture of the Day and so forth. As stated on a network wide news item (which I trust you have been keeping up with), this was merely a database bug that apparently occured whilst the Filefront Network underwent some maintainence and for now we're back up and running, although there may be the odd problem that still needs to be ironed out. Bare with us! wink

However, Elite Force files has seen a decline in submissions by you users recently both in terms of files, but more noticebly concerning the Picture of the Day and news. I realise that both Elite Force games are now showing their age and are nowhere near as popular as they once were, even after the 2007/8 revival of EF1 using RPG-X. It would be nice, though, to reach the 10th birthday of the series later this year, so if you are able, please continue submitting content. smile

Kapow! We're back, and it's been a while too, so I'm going to just get on with it.

Covenant at War
The Covenant, until recently they've been playing curiosly small role in the mod, with only three ships and two fighter classes to fend off the UNSC's various weapons of destruction, but not anymore. The mod Halo: Sins of the Prophets for Sins of a Solar Empire (http://www.moddb.com/mods/halo-sins-of-the-prophets) are good friends of ours, we've been working with them and trading models for quite some time and now they're helping us fill in the Covenant shaped hole in CaW.
The first ship to be revealed from this trade is the Covenant Destroyer, fully skinned and ingame:

And that something would be Anh, he's been disconnected from the Internet for quite some time, so unfortunately you're not going to get to read his usual wall of text and awesome, sorry guys, maybe next time.

Empire at War: Phoenix Rising: I am the dark side!
Caprioril and Kaikielius have fallen. Renegade Imperials troops are under siege on Coruscant. Imperial strike fleets led by Klev’s Silencer-7 and Pellaeon’s Chimaera are poised over Nyasko and Abregado-Rae respectively. The Dark Side Elite await orders on Vjun and Prakith. Orders have gone out to annihilate all traces of the New Republic throughout the galaxy. But all pales before the vast armada of gunships, assault transports, cruisers, Star Destroyers and giant Battlecruisers in orbit over Byss and even these behemoths are overshadowed by the brooding menace of Palpatine’s flagship – The Soverign.

The New Republic has withdrawn from the Core Worlds, with the exception of a few critical strongholds such as Metellos, Anaxes and Brentaal-IV determined to slow the Imperial advance at a heavy price. With the fleet regrouping over Da Soocha 5, the shipyards at Bilbringi and Kuat have been deploying Republic-class Star Destroyers to boost ageing fleets of medium frigates and cruisers, while the secret shipyards of Hast and Krinemonen-III have been producing state-of-the-art Mon-Calamari frigates, cruisers and capital warships to strengthen the new bases in the Outer Rim Territories, with brand new E-Wings from Norval II adding additional punch to the starfighter force.

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas: Fake GTA Story Results in Damages
Here is an interesting piece of news, the Daily Star a British based newspaper apparently reported that the next GTA would have been called GTA: Rothbury which would have been based around the North East England (Newcastle upon Tyne, Middlesborough and Sunderland areas). Although this was a fake piece of news that was apparently based on a sick joke about a recent tradegy that happened.

Although despite this a GTA based around the Newcastle area would have made an interesting game especially with all of those drunken football supporters from Newcastle! and all the rest of the Geordies!

Halo 2: I hope you all held onto your Halo 1 PC CD keys!
Well, due to various factors, such as the tweaking by the overlords (Break.com) and the fact that no note worthy news for the Halo community has surfaced until the introduction of Forge World in Halo Reach a little while back, then I'd say it is time for some news. Wouldn't you all agree? wink

First off, if you all still have your Halo 1 PC CD keys, used them when you first bought the game brand new in 2003 or afterwards, and provided that you played the various multiplayer modes before the cut-off date of May 26th 2010 (you had more than enough time to do so wink ) and are planning on buying Halo Reach in September this year, then you may get a little something extra in Reach.

Warcraft III: Warcraft IV - Edge of Eternity Mod Update
Warcraft IV mod team have been updating their mod tirelessly over the past weeks and months to get the game out for their release date of 31 July 2010, which now is only a couple of days away. The mod update features the menu music which you can here by going over to their Mod DB profile .

Chernobyl - Lost Riddles Mod have again provided us with an update, this time to their camera system. One of the most promising mods in the Warcraft 3 market keeps continuing to impress everyone, this time with an added camera feature, read the update by De.Facto below:

Warcraft III: Destiny of the Hoof - Mod Update
For those of you that don't know what the mod is all about then read below, it's a very exciting new mod with a great new storyline that has just been released, which is the main feature of todays update:

Warcraft III: Starcraft 1.5 3D Conversion Mod Update- Neo Lost Temple Map
A massive update from night_wolveX, giving us an overall development of the mod so far, to coincide with the release of Starcraft 2 today!

Here is the full update he has given on the Neo Lost Temple Map so far:

About the File
This is a further modification of the Company of Brothers mod, released a few days ago. It fixes some bugs and adds some new features, including veterancy for the Allies, price changes, and various other balancing modifications.

Star Wars Battlefront 2: Battlefront Zero
Battlefront Zero, version 5.0, is the latest iteration of MandeRek & co.'s large-scale mod. It's a big helping of a lot of custom content, and definitely one of the larger mods available, and if for nothing else should be recognized for giving people a lot of new stuff to try out.

This version is an upgrade to the previously released version 3.0, which was released here about half a year ago. This newer version makes one major change - the addition of a GCW era on some maps - and several smaller changes, like bugfixes. As mentioned, the bulk of any new content for this version lies in the new era (GCW). The Rebels and Imperials are done up in BF0 fashion, although with these sides the weapons are either weaker or the units simply seem to have more health. The GCW sides aren't available on every planet, but they are on most of the BF0 maps, as well as a copy of the Death Star map.

Star Wars Battlefront 2: Dark Times II: Rising Son
Maveritchell's The Dark Times II: Rising Son is to Battlefront modding what Beethoven is to writing symphonies. It is the culmination of months and years of work, constant diligence, and lots of experience. This is pretty much the pinnacle of modding achievement, and I've never seen a mod that comes anywhere close to what this one brings to the table.

This mod essentially includes sixteen new maps, a total of 105 distinct missions, lots of new units, new weapons, new heroes and Force powers, and a brand new Galactic Conquest mode that serves as a campaign. While this alone may seem like a lot, it also includes a few brand-new game modes, a full campaign on par with the shipped Battlefront II one, and the entirety of the original Dark Times mod. This is to say, you do not need the original to play this edition. Due to the fact that this mod is much too big to cover every facet of it in a single review, I will do my best to break it down into categories and review each of those with a paragraph or two.

The new RealSights mutator invokes a much more accurate simulation of what it's like to look down iron sights and scopes of real world weapons. Most FPS games have the weapon linked statically to your view, sometimes (as in BiA) adding "sway" that moves your vision and the weapon together around randomly. With the RealSights mutator, as in real life, your focus or view does not sway or change. Rather, the weapon is what sways, due to involuntary muscle contractions, breathing, heartrate, and so on.

About the File
This is another version of the Devastation mod, an effort to make the game more realistic as well as reworking gameplay. It features new units, in addition to modifications to existing ones.

Staff Impressions
Among one of the best things about this mod is larger infantry squads. The basic CoH/OF squads were too small, and had a tendency to die. Besides that fact, the "special" tanks (Tigers/Pershings) are now available for production. But that's not to say the mod is unbalanced. Each side is well-balanced, with none being unbeatable.

Just a preview of the NineHammers Shotgun from Pegaso Chronicles. If you will find any bug related to the weapon ammo going -1, don't bother yourself to make me know that because it's a DooM 3 bug. Pegaso Chronicles needs RoE to work and you will never find that bug in the mod. The weapon will be in the player inventory when you load a map.

HOW IT WORKS: Open the rar file and extract the folder pc_ninehammers in your Doom 3 folder. Then, open the extracted folder and "double-click" ( open ) the file "ninehammers.bat". Now... play Doom 3. To spawn the weapon just open the console and type: spawn weapon_ninehammers To spawn the moveable instead of the static model type: spawn moveable_item_ninehammers

Squad Level Tactics is a mission for Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising that focuses primarily on the players ability to command a squad of AI soldiers through a gauntlet of hostile PLA forces in an attempt to complete a series of six dynamic mission objectives. This mission offers a completely dynamic tactical gaming experience. With random weather, time of day, infantry and vehicle spawning, objective placement, eleven different start zones and the complete use of the island of Skirinka in addition to the entire island of Skira, anyone will be able to play this mission with virtually unlimited outcomes.

The mission itself is actually eleven missions, one for each start zone, all linked together by an external game data saving system that allows for the missions to be played as single missions and still record all of your statistical data, including mission progress and overall campaign statistics.

This mod adds balanced Experimental Shield Generators to each faction, they are great protection from artillery and large ground attacks but are very vulnerable against air attacks.

I have tried to not make them overpowered - but inline with the rest of the experimental units, a Supreme Shield Generator just has enough regeneration to tank one rapid fire artillery installation, maybe a bit more.

Call of Duty 4: MP Dassance
Based on the house where I spent most of my teenage years. I designed the house and surrounding area to look as it did when I lived there. The real location has changed a bit over the years but this map is still a very close
representation of how it still looks today. In addition to the main house the house across the road is based on my grandmothers house where she still lives today.

This is a fantastic map, with a great layout based on Twig_Masters' old area where he used to live, which adds a little extra quality and creativity to the map. The layout is great as mentioned before, the actual map itself would seem to be a very entertaining map that any game types can be played on although, if I were hosting this map I'd play it as a DM/TDM/Domination or Sabotage.

CnC Generals: HAARP Challenge (1.1)
This is a test map for a map.ini that gives the superweapon general a HAARP earthquake generator instead of the particle cannon. It is basically the Nuke general challenge map with you playing as superweapon general.

Besides building the HAARP superweapon (code in map.ini), some other objects have been tweaked (in solo.ini): Your Avenger's lasers can shoot down shell projectiles. Base defences can also do so, though not as fast as Avengers. Nuke missiles can be shot down by concentrated air defences. Artillery platforms have better guns - use the control rods upgrade to make them fire twice as fast. Your supply dropzones now use armed cargo planes - build them along the bottom edge of the map so the planes fly over the enemy base and cause a bit of damage.

About the File
This is a re-doing of the author's map Achelous River, which features (among other things) more footbridges, a different scattering of points, and a rework of how it plays. It also now supports up to 8 players.

Staff Impressions
This map has seen major changes since it was first uploaded, but it's still (visually) as nice as ever. Excellent object placement and varied textures make it not only play well, but look good while you're doing it.

As for gameplay, that has been rather altered. Clusters of points, and large numbers of them, mean that the game get bigger, faster. Players who want to defend the bridges had better dig in fast, lest they be overrun by an enemy fuelled by the resource-rich islands.

Company of Heroes: Operation: Brevity
About the File
This is a 2v2 map set in the desert. It features opportunities for tank, infantry, and defensive players to shine, although defensive players will likely have an easier time of it due to the pre-dug trenches.

Staff Impressions
We don't see enough desert maps around here. In any case, this map is designed more for hard combat than good looks, with few objects placed that aren't directly intended to be used as defensive emplacements. The good news is that the textures at least seem varied, thanks to the tank tracks sprinkled liberally around.

Strategically, this map is intended for a sort of "trench warfare" approach, with defensive players especially gaining the upper hand if they fortify the middle early.

This is a clean map. A clean, flat, wasteland. Although it doesn't look like at first glance, the is a nice level of parity between the halves. A single land bridge connects the sides, although there is plenty of room for battles not around the bridge.

Hint for Rebels: Use R2-D2 to slice the turbolasers on the opposite side of the bridge for ultimate control.

That map makes my often cry ! after 4 week of building i´ve start the first compiling to try a test. But the compiling fails, so edit the errors and compiling again, well done. Start Sof2 and load the map for bug hunting...OMG, what happend here. Shaders and textures are missing, some invisible brushes are blocking the streets and so on. Re edit this map and correct some entities etc. Compiling gone fail. Again edit, but now i select House by House and saved them as a prefab. Thats tooks me alot of Time, but this work finde, now the map is clear and works perfectly.

Star Wars Battlefront 2: Dathomir (1.0)
TK432 comes to us today with this map, entitled simply 'Dathomir'. This is a medium-sized map set on a dark grassland with a dry river cutting through the middle. It features support for the Dark Times mod, as well as Battlefront Extreme.

This map is interesting primarily because of its atmosphere. It seems to be set at the early hours of the morning when the sun hasn't quite risen from behind the curve of the Earth. This is to say that the map is very dark. For me, personally, it was not dark enough to be unplayable, but it was at a point where I struggled to see a fair bit of the units. Taking in the map is hard as well, which is unfortunate because it looks like the author put in a large amount of work making the map very good- and it is, with well-placed objects, smooth, natural terrain, and a good usage of models. However, this is diminished somewhat due to the fact that you can't see a good deal of it.

Star Wars Battlefront 2: Endor: Death Watch Bunker
"Endor: Death Watch Bunker," by AQT, is a tunnels-based map based off of some instance of Star Wars Galaxies lore. In terms of Battlefront II, it bears more resemblance, physically, to Hoth than it does Endor.

The majority of the map is constructed with retextured Hoth tunnels. They use sort've a sandy texture that looks strange in contrast with the topsoil on Endor, but I suppose it is accurate to the Galaxies vision of the area. The tunnels play as many Hoth-based tunnel maps before have, for better or for worse. I think it is fun enough, if not entirely new. There is a tunnel connector used in several areas of the tunnels, and it has an overlarge grate texture that sticks out a lot - I only mention it now because I know I'd mentioned it before. I think this would look a lot better if it were changed to match the surrounding sandstone texture.

This is my first (started) map, It's a medium sized achievement map, with a variation of tools to help you get achievements and to have fun with your friends. This is one of my first maps, and the pictures might not give a good first impression but its a fun map to play in with enough to do and explore.

    It would seem that once again the fortress builders have gotten away with building two hostile bases right next door to each other, and neither side has cottoned on to this deceptive money (and gravel) making scheme!

    Hidden away behind seemingly innocent buildings, 2 secret bases work tirelessly to uncover alternative power sources in the increasingly desperate times as gravel supplies run out. Top of the list is a deathray powered only by sandviches. However, it seems the other faction have had similar ideas, and now the bases do little more than fight to try and get a peek at the other team's plans.

    DM-Androm is suitable for 8-16 players. The map has two levels. The lower level is thought as a temple of an alien race and the upper level is a docking-bay for ships. The player can get to the upper level by using a teleporter or by using the giant fan that is situated in the middle of the room to be propeled to the upper level. Some items can be obtained by disabling the two generators that are situated on the lower level.

    World of Warcraft: Return of the Legends (V. 1.00)
    I got this idea when I was thinking on how I could remake my current map (found Here) while I thought about Orc Gladiators. So this map contains elements and ideas from both of them. The current idea go as following:

    1) There will be 2 teams and 1 arena. The teams will have a base on each side of the arena and there will be a barrier in the middle of the arena so the teams will be divided. This will be a custom hero map so it starts off with the players choosing their hero and his skills (3 normal + 1 ulti). When they all have chosen heroes they will get teleported to their base.

    Black and chrome m1911a1 pistol skin. (Never liked the original) Added a few details to grip, some chrome and shading. Turned out pretty sweet. Will replace stock skin, didnt add new sound (due to all the sound mods)

    still problems with jk3files.com ? (jediknight3.filefront.com)

    - new files-list stops at 07-15 '10
    - jk2files.com = jka
    - jk3files.com not attainable

    fast dl-speed from EU, 20 MBit/s. (DE->CH)
    really not bad, but, in this case, much more would be possible.

    JK2 files redirects to JK3 files on purpose, I believe. The JK3 files thing will be fixed. The new files... I'm suspecting that's a problem with the database, because it seems to be happening on other sites as well that are usually extremely active...

    We are aware that a number of domain names aren't pointing at the appropriate sites. It's being looked into.

    And yes, the download speed increase is deliberate. smile It's as a result of the servers being moved to Break's data centre.
