Filefront Gaming Today News: Gabe Says Nobody But Valve Will Ever Make a Half-Life Movie

Why are movie adaptations of games so terrible? Because the people who made the adapted games weren’t part of the filmmaking process, right? That’s what Gabe Newell says. Here’s what he told PC Gamer about possible Half-Life adaptations:

“Where we got into this direction was after Half-Life 1 had shipped. There was a whole bunch of meetings with people from Hollywood. Directors down there wanted to make a Half-Life movie and stuff, so they’d bring in a writer or some talent agency would bring in writers, and they would pitch us on their story. And their stories were just so bad. I mean, brutally, the worst. Not understanding what made the game a good game, or what made the property an interesting thing for people to be a fan of.

Filefront Gaming Today News: Guild Wars 2 Necromancer Class Detailed

Guild Wars 2 brings back the Necromancer class from the first game with some interesting twists. Players used to playing the pet-centric Necromancer can look forward to more gruesome magical undead minions but there seems to be a bit more this time out. The necromancer has some new abilities like area control through “Wells” and “Marks” as well as “fear” based attacks to break enemy morale.

As indicated in the earlier news about Guild Wars 2, all classes have some solo healing power now, so the Blood Fiend summon allows the dread Necro to summon a minion that heals when it attacks.

Filefront Gaming Today News: Mafia II Review

Too often we think of the quality of games only in extreme terms; usually we either say a game is amazing or not good. And that’s it.

Mafia II is neither amazing nor not good. It’s just good.

What we have here is a game that is unusual. It’s an open-world game, but it’s very linear all the same, not unlike Crysis. A chapter begins, typically, when the main character, Vito, wakes up and gets a phone call. You want me to meet you somewhere, Joe? OK. You go meet Joe or whoever, do something, shoot some guys and go back home and go to bed. Chapter over. There’s not gonna be much dicking around on the player’s part, because there’s not much dicking around that you can do aside from robbing stores for little money or running over pedestrians in your car. The only extra thing I ever did after a mission was go to the store and buy a new outfit with my hard-earned cash from the day.

The story is pretty slight. It’s a typical coming-up-in-the-mob tale, and it takes elements from most mafia movies you’ve seen, but it still manages to surprise in some very pleasing ways. The game opens with Vito fighting in Italy in World War II, and you actually spend an entire chapter in prison.

Filefront Gaming Today News: Metroid: Other M Review

The latest entry in the venerable Metroid series is Metroid: Other M. Developed by Team Ninja and set just after the events of 1994′s Super Metroid, Other M features a brand new story starring intrepid bounty hunter Samus Aran. It’s also one of the more highly anticipated games of 2010. Does it live up to the hype?

One of the first things you’ll notice about Metroid: Other M is that Samus actually has quite a bit of dialogue. This is both a positive and a negative, as some of the dialogue is painful to listen to. Trust me when I say that you’ll be sick of hearing about the Baby. Plus, Samus comes off as less a bounty hunting badass, and more a whiny brat. Still, it doesn’t spoil the story.

The game begins as you watch a cinematic of the conclusion of Super Metroid, and you get to see what happens to Samus afterward. Soon, Samus returns to her ship, and while flying through space, she receives a distress call. Following the call takes her to the “Bottle Ship,” where the majority of the game takes place. There, she teams up with a team of Galactic Federation soldiers to search for survivors.

Filefront Gaming Today News: Spartans Deliver Hope In New “Deliver Hope” Live-Action Ad

This week I was all like, “oh guys i love halo live action videos and stuff wooo yeah baby they get me pumped up,” but this new one, Deliver Hope, didn’t do much for me. Maybe it’s because there’s too much DTV CGI, something that We Are ODST handled much better by quick cutting. Or maybe it’s because this one musical cue in the middle sounds way too much like the beginning of My Heart Will Go On, and now I just wanna watch Titanic. Anyway, here’s some hope delivery for your eyes.

Filefront Gaming Today News: Splitfish Dual SFX Evolution PS3/PC Controller Review

Game controllers, as a rule, don’t see real innovation very often. SplitFish however has a different take on what gamers want and the SFX EVOLUTION is a lot different from your conventional after market/3rd party PS3 controller. Breaking away from the DualShock-like design of most PS3 controllers, the Frag FX is actually two handheld pieces – the FragChuck and EvoChuck - that communicate wirelessly. Ostensibly, you might be shocked to see these two halves of the unit. They look very much like something you might buy for a Nintendo Wii instead of a Sony PS3 (The upcoming Move controllers excepted).

Instead of a single handheld unit with two analog sticks, a D-pad and a bunch of colored buttons and triggers, the EVOLUTION segregates the functions into left and right hand controllers. Both parts share the analog trigger controls, so thumbsticks are nicely mounted on either unit. In most games the right thumbstick analog controls the view while the left analog controls movement. This controller design feels a bit awkward at first but is ultimately a lot more comfortable to hold for long periods of time.

Filefront Gaming Today News: Weird. A Superman Returns Mod For GTA: San Andreas

I can’t decide if this is the funniest thing I’ve seen all week, or the lamest thing to happen to GTA since they made it impossible to enjoy the ending of GTA 4. I’m talking about Grand Theft Auto: Superman Returns, the first mod from the aptly named Superman For Grand Theft Auto Group. Their stated goal is to bring Superman to GTA, presumably in all his forms. In addition to today’s entry, they’re also working on GTA versions of the Reign of the Superman DC storyline, Smallville1, and a tribute to Christopher Reeve.

Superman Returns arrived yesterday. It’s a super simple add on – No new missions or anything – that lets you replace San Andreas protagonist CJ with a very crude rendition of Brandon Routh. (Based on the image above, it appears that the Superman Suit is accessible as a selectable Costume, ala the Gimp Suit.) If this strikes your fancy, and you’ve always wanted to commit brazen acts of antisocial carnage while fighting for Truth, Justice and The American Way, here’s your chance.

Filefront Gaming Today News: Worms: Reloaded Review

Ever since the first Worms game launched in 1995, the series has given countless hours of enjoyment to gamers who enjoy lobbing a variety of weapons at their opponents. The latest entry in the series, Worms: Reloaded, is now available on Steam, and we got a chance to get our hands on it and see just what developer Team17 has in store in the series’ return to PC.

If you aren’t familiar with the series, the concept is absurdly simple. You control a team of worms whose goal is to annihilate an opposing team of worms. There are a variety of ways you can accomplish this, from explosions to simply knocking an opposing worm into the water. Weapons are the most fun way, and as it’s a Worms game, you won’t be surprised at the large arsenal of weaponry you can acquire.

The default weapon is a standard bazooka that requires you to properly judge the wind, the power behind the shot, and the arc at which you fire it. However, the more interesting weapons are what make the game fun. Air strikes let you blanket an are with munitions, exploding sheep run to assault your foes, and the inimitable Holy Hand Grenade lays waste to enemies and a large chunk of landscape alike.

Battlefield 2142: First Strike Developer Diary #20 - Krenyo
This week we're going to bring back an old First Strike tradition to keep you entertained while you await the forthcoming release of First Strike 1.5. That old classic the Developer Diary. Now it has been a good year and a half since we've released one of these, RedMonkey was #19 way back in November '08.

With a lot of fresh blood on the team we thought it was high time we brought these back, and we start this revival this week with two of the current rising stars on the Dev Team, both have taken on the role of Lead Developers on the two new maps you'll be recieving with the release of 1.5. So with no further ado, lets introduce you to the first...

Hello there troopers. Let me introduce myself. I am Krenyo the creator of many different assets for First Strike, and perhaps the lead contributor to version 1.5.

Let me start by giving you a little history lesson. I started my FS experience as a humble player who waited eagerly for a long time reading the news posts and watching the forums before version 1 was released. Having always been a huge star wars fan and having spent many, many hours playing the old Galactic Conquest mod, First strike was a dream mod come true.

Battlefield 2142: First Strike Developer Diary #201- Twigs
Continuing our revival of the Developer Diary this week on the eve of the next release, it is the turn of FSDev Twigs. Now we must not allow him the modesty to sell himself short, he'll say he doesn't do an awful lot on First Strike, but he is currently a backbone of the dev team, ably switching between mapping and coding tasks and project management. If you want a job done, he's your go-to-guy. So let's see what he has to say on the subject of his development on the team, and his love note to X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, the space map Strike at Parmel...

Hey folks, well looks like we’re starting the Dev diary series again so here is my little entry. I’m Twigs, many of you may have seen me in game where I usually go by JE_Twigs and wear the FSDev clan tags. The JE comes from my old clan, TRA (The Rebel Alliance) and stands for Jedi Elite.

Anyways, on with the important stuff, what exactly do I do for the mod? Well, not a lot really! I started off as a tester, recruited shortly after the release of First Strike 1.0, eventually becoming the so called ‘Testing Team Leader’. A lot of the devs and testers used to hang around in an IRC channel, and some of us discussed porting some of the X-Wing series missions over to First Strike. As a result of this FSDev Woodrow and FSDev Imperial conjured up a magical little programme, the First Strike Space Editor.

Battlefield 2: Where No Two Wheels Can Go
Hello all, sorry for the delay in site updates, we've been having some technical issues, but we should now be up to full speed smile

Forgotten Hope 2 does it again, today we have the SdKfz 124 (half-track), and as usual it is a model that contains the utmost attention to detail and should make for some historic and fun gameplay.

Quote:
Hello and welcome back to another update of Forgotten Hope. Today we have a vehicle that most FH1 players should be very familiar with, and a very exciting update to an already existing FH2 gameplay feature.

Up first we have the first self-propelled artillery gun to make an appearance in FH2! The SdKfz 124 Wespe is a German mobile artillery piece that saw action from 1943 to 1945.

When the need for a self-propelled artillery gun arose, the Panzer II was chosen and removed from service after its inherent drawbacks became known during the Battle of France. The Wespe was little more than a Panzer II chassis with the turret removed and a 105mm howitzer and gun-shield added. It first saw action in 1943 on the Eastern Front and proved so successful, that the German high command ordered that all Panzer II production be reserved for the Wespe, which effectively canceled other projects such as the Marder II. By mid-1944 682 Wespes had been produced along with another 158 weaponless ammunition carriers. The SdKfz 124 Wespe was modeled and skinned by Toddel.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Mod Tools Confirmed!!
'pcdev' PC Leader for Call of Duty Black Ops has confirmed in a forum post that mod tools and the dev console have been confirmed for Call of Duty Black Ops!

Quote:
We plan to open the game up for modding sometime post-launch. We do not know yet to what extent you will be able to mod the game. There are some purely technical issues related to engine and internal tool enhancements that do not easily fit the modtools paradigm. We have looked at it close enough to see that it is non-trivial and we will have to pick it up again post-launch. Right now we are completely focused on finishing the game.

And, dev console: confirmed.

Empire at War: Covenant at War: Apex Studios Weekly Update 27/07/2010

Sooo... this mod thing
It’s pretty awesome so far, unbalanced in places, but awesome. The Covenant win almost every battle (no, they aren't too strong, they are just too many). But it's fun. Everywhere you look, something is exploding or is melting down, missiles rocketing through empty space waiting for impact, plasma bolts ripping apart the many fighter swarms, and away is your fleet and half of theirs…
You’re under constant pressure, trying to keep the covenant away from your base at any cost, and rushing to their base in an attempt to avoid any covenant ships that may be waiting for you. During one test I did something wrong and they “appeared” at my base, destroying it with bombers en mass and big ships holding of anti-fighter operations (Makos have very little armour).

Down going up
As some of you may have noticed, the website’s been down for a while. We were moving the servers, still hosting with a friend, but we're on our own server now (together with the aforementioned friend). It is way faster of course, giving us the opportunity to satisfy more people at the same time and giving them more than just the website back. We've got new forums now: http://halocaw.net/forum/ myBB 1.6, in my funky sparkling eyes the best forum software in the world, will help us to overcome those rusty old forums with aging software (IPBoard 1.3, which is roughly seven years old) and fill the user-friendly gap between us and you, bringing us into the new era of internet. It also got an exclusive design, based on Aaron Clifford’s myBB gamer design. Feedback in any way is appreciated.

Empire at War: FX Mod: Subfactions and More

Welcome to the third and last big update before the release of FX Mod. A lot has changed in the mod since the last time. We've paid attention mostly to gameplay enhancements, though we didn't forget about graphical sweetness. But let's get to the point.

The Subfactions
What is this all about?
Subfaction system in skirmish gives you choice of 3 subfactions (3 for space, 3 for land), each of them grants you an access to a different set of upgrades and bonus units. So let's say if you choose 501st Legion for the Empire, you get unique infantry upgrades and units specific for that subfaction (while the basic imperial units stay without change).

Empire at War: Thrawn's Revenge: Release Reschedule
The mod release schedule for the mod has changed slightly. The original plan was to just release it on the 26th, and then patch it as needed afterwards. However, we've decided that the release on the 26th will be done as an open beta, and just released on our forums in the Members Only section. Then, depending on what gets reported, between 4 and 6 days later we will be doing a full release of the mod. This allows us to get the mod to a slightly larger group of people than the 10-15 that have been testing it for the last month, and should allow us to catch any major errors we've missed before sending it to the public at large. It is confined to the Members Section of our forums because the people who download it should be posting any issues they find, and to do that, you need to be registered. It's free and it takes about 5 seconds though, so hopefully that isn't too big of a problem for anyone. If it is, just wait the four days.

Far Cry 2: New Map Pack FirePhoenix & Hydragod upcomming called Super Jump
[How it started]
FirePhoenix and Hydragod were a bit bored at the beginning of the vacation. They started to create a new style of gaming for Far Cry 2, The idea comes from another game but what FirePhoenix and Hydragod wanted to do is to bring this gamestyle to Far Cry 2!

[What is it that these two map designers have created?]
Let me explain it to you!
You join a server that has a Super Jump map on it or just host one by yourself! Once you are in the game your goal is to jump from platform-to-platform. Look for a platform and jump on it, then look for the next platform. You may not kill other players but you have to reach the end of the map! Between the start and the finish you have to jump alot and avoid several obstacles. Find your route through the map and perhaps you will make it to the end.

[The map pack, how many maps will the Super Jump map pack have?]
Both map designers have created four maps so the map pack will have eight maps. Enough maps for a little bit variation. Try them all out by yourself and practise a lot so that you have a bigger advantage compared to other players!

Flight Simulator: Staff and Site Changes
As of yesterday, I have returned to working on this site and plan to try my very best to turn it around. I think it would be a real shame for this site to fizzle out as many of you who download mods for FSX or other flight sim titles will know that a lot of sites charge you a membership fee in order to access their library of freeware, or cap their download speeds and download limits. Seeing as at FileFront we are not bound by these limitations, I firmly believe that this could be the best site and most comprehensive resource of Flight Simulation Add-ons in the community .

With that in Mind over the coming weeks I am going to be making some changes to the site and adding lots of new files. Due to popularity I will be starting off with FSX and then working my way through the other titles.

Left for Dead 2: The Sacrifice
The Sacrifice, new DLC for both Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2, was revealed today by Valve. The DLC will be compatible with both games, so no matter which one you have, you’ll be able to play it.

The new DLC follows the survivors from the original campaign, and fills in the gap between the end of the first game and The Passing DLC for Left 4 Dead 2. The game is done from the perspective of the original game’s cast, and explains how they come to meet up with the Left 4 Dead 2 cast. As the name implies, you will also be able to choose who lives and who dies, rather than having to live with Valve’s decision (according to the current DLC, it’s Bill who doesn’t make it. Sad face).

Another nice feature is the inclusion of the No Mercy campaign (the hospital level, one of the most popular from the original game) for Left 4 Dead 2 owners, allowing you to play the campaign with the updated weapons and zombie types. Half-Life: Earth's Special Forces: Animation Blends
Two new systems have been developed that will allow ESF to have smoother animations; vertex weights and animation blends.

Vertex Weights: Allows a vertex to be influenced by one or more bones.
By assigning a percent value to each "weight" the system determines how much a vertex is affected by each bone. For example, if DarkTooth were to animate a shoulder joint under Saiyan armor the arm would move normally, but the armor, which is less flexible would move less to provide a more realistic appearance of motion.

Animation Blends: Expands Half-Life’s cap on the number of animation frames available per animation and provides a system to insert animations in between actions.

Half-Life: Earth's Special Forces: Frieza 2 Renders
Well it has been a while hasn't it? There's been a lot of work going on behind the scenes recently. Raven and the other coders have been working hard on new systems and optimizations and we're improving the game every day. But first, as some of you may or may not know Super Vegetto (aka SV) has been working overtime, and he and God Gundam (aka GG) have been making a lot of progress on character models. So today, we'd like to present the new Frieza form 2 model and skin. Not only are the model and skin high quality, but also highly detailed.

Our favorite modeling/texturing duo has been keeping the pace up. This week God Gundam and Super Vegetto have created a new Frieza Form 1 model that meets the current ESF standard of having a fully animated mouth and hands. There hasn't been any time wasted from the animation side either. Below is a quick render of a taunt that Darktooth made.

Halo 2: Halo 1 PC Keys Update. Visual flair ahoy! (SPOILERS!)
(We don't have a Halo Reach news banner yet. I'll see what I can do to correct that smile ) Last month, you may have seen this news post.
http://halo2.filefront.com/news/I_hope_you_all_held_onto_your_Halo_1_PC_CD_keys;47877

This is a related update to that post. Basically, if you have completed any or all of the following requirements, you will then get some extra emblams, similar to the Bungie emblam that is available by choice next to your gamertag in Halo 3 matchmaking. They won't be available on launch, but they will be available soon after.

The requirements were:

  • The Septagon – This option returns for anyone who links their LIVE account to their Bungie.net account.
  • The DMR – A pro weapon for Pro members. Get Bungie Pro to bump up your File Share, render videos, and get this emblem. Active subscriptions bought in Halo 3 or Halo 3: ODST carry over to Halo: Reach, of course.
  • Marathon – Play the full version of Marathon: Durandal on Xbox LIVE Arcade to enable the Pfhor Terminal emblem.
  • Halo 1 – Enter your Halo 1 PC/Mac product key to enable this emblem. Each key can only be used once, so you’d better stop reading this and grab that key before your brother does. Since we have no way to validate who has played the Xbox version, this emblem is reserved for that dedicated community of computer gamers, with over 50k unique users still active each month, 7 years after release. Thanks for sticking with us. It’s been quite a ride!
  • Halo 2 – Automatically available if you played Halo 2 for Xbox on your LIVE account before its tearful retirement. If it’s not active for you, no amount of wheedling will change that, sorry.
  • Halo 3 – Take a guess… On the plus side, there’s plenty of time to head to your local purveyor of fine, shrink-wrapped games to snag a copy if you’re the one person who actually reads the news on our site and hasn’t played this game.
  • Halo 3: ODST – Ditto.

The cutoff date for the use of Halo 1 PC keys (28th May 2010) now appears to be null and void. In summary, if you want the extra Halo 1 emblam, run out and buy a sealed copy of Halo 1 PC if you can find one. All those of you that did this on launch date or after should be good to go already. wink

Starcraft 2: How To Edit Terrain In StarCraft 2 Editor

It seems like there’s always something new with StarCraft 2 that seems designed to make the Blizzard fan community ginormously frustrated, and today we’ve got a big one for you: Once you’ve created your very own StarCraft 2 mod, welcome to survival of the fittest. Your map is only playable online. That’s right, no practicing in Single Player, you’re going to have to submit your map to the judgment of your peers if you want to do anything more than test it.

Well, if you want to have any hope of escaping the mockery of your merciless fellow players, you’ll need to create a map with varied terrain, plenty of obstacles, and some cool scenery for your SCII soldiers to MDK each other in. Jedi Knight III: Raschu's and Ashura's Steampunk Pack Teaser
Y'know, I've always feared teasers, as sometimes the final product never really shows up. However, more hope is instilled as a new teaser pack reaches our eager eyes. So, this new teaser contains the following:

- A new kyle reskin: Kyle has now gotten quite rustic, and has been given a new sort of coat and pants, giving him a rather patrician look, for the most part. Pretty neat looking, I'll give ya that. Might make a fitting kyle override...yes =_=

- A new jan reskin: Jan pretty took a different approach, with an all white undersuit and rustic brown jacket and hair to match. It also seems to have french taunts, so you've been warned if you experience culture shock.

Stalker: Daniel's mod for OL 2.2 (1.0)
This mod is an add-on for Kanyhalos' Oblivion Lost v2.2. It puts back a lot of vanilla elements while maintaining the parts that make Oblivion Lost so great, including the open ended conclusion allowing you to return to the Zone after visiting the CNPP. It also makes changes to the text, spelling, poor translations; adds keys, detectors, flash drives, vanilla HUD elements, new Bar radio station; and several changes to the final level. That's just a fraction of what this add-on mod does, for a complete list please read the mods documentation.

This mod comes with an installer, simply add Oblivion Lost 2.2 to the game first then run the installer to add the new content and changes.

This pack was done for one server and I decided to share it with the community. It adds FG-42F, Carbine M2, BAR M1918A2 early, Springfield M1903A1 and Scoped Gewehr 43 as a new MP weapon menu items. Please note that some weapon models are of older date, it was meant to be like that. I improved the animation for the FG-42F specially and made better rendering for my custom models (4). It also changes all MP weapon menu icons into real life photos, changes all weapon HUD icons into CoD1 style (white), Makes Russian and German grenades cookable, modifies the firing flash and shelleject effects (removes tracers from non-machinegun weapons, makes fire flashes more juicy and makes machinegun tracers better and with impact effect).

Jedi Knight III: Ashura's Felucia rancor
I'm doing reviews and I'm still alive...still alive.

'The Force Unleashed'. There, I've said it. You may now proceed to either scream at the top of your lungs that you love it or that you hate it. I'll be honest, I've never played it stick out tongue

In any case, we have here two new rancors, meant to look like a rancor from Felucia, as seen in TFU. Included are a normal and a glowy version - both can be seen on screenshot #2. I'll quote Laam'inui's review of a similar file:
Quote:
I'm sure you've all seen the Rancor from The Force Unleashed, and thought 'Man, I wish I could fight him with my backhanded saber dozens of times over, each time using a different Starkiller skin!'. Well, now you can!

Seriously though, it's not a bad skin at all. The only thing that bugged me was the back of the thing, where the glowy spots seemed to just stop semi-randomly. That's probably just a matter of personal preference though.
Also, personally, I'd love to see an optional version that simply overwrites the textures of the old rancor instead of creating a new NPC. Something for a second version, perhaps? wink Either way, if you want a TFU rancor, Ashura just delivered it.

Jedi Knight III: Ashura's Jawa Pack V1.1
So, after Ashura's Jawa Pack yesterday, he brings us a new version today! Ashura has again followed my suggestions (really now, that's twice, don't make me declare you insane! wink), and has done the following:

Split into several files
The Jawa skin, ionization blaster & fusion cutter now each have their own .pk3 file, so you can choose which parts you want to install; you can have just the skin, just the blaster or just the fusion cutter if you want, or a combination of them.

Jawa overwrite
The final new .pk3 file lets you overwrite the default Jawa skin with Ashura's jawa skin - definitely one I'm keeping smile

Jedi Knight III: Push Power Changer Utillity
Here we have a small mod, made by AshuraDX for changing the strength of your force push. I have to admit, I'm not exactly sure whether this affects single player, multiplayer or both, since it isn't specified in the readme. As far as SP goes, a more powerful force push would certainly be fun, especially on a level like Taspir, where you can push some Reborn's and Stormies off the bridges and into the lava. I always have a bit of a chuckle doing that. I know, I am evil. wink

I'm not a fan of anything that changes the gameplay in MP though, simply because this unbalances the game and makes things quite unfair, à la 'long sabers' or sabers with increased damages.

Star Wars Battlefront 2: Chat Reader and Admin Commander (1.0)
Dark_Matthias returns today with this new tool for administrating Battlefront 2 dedicated servers. Essentially, this tool appears to read the chat messages sent on a SWBF2 dedicated server and list them here on the client. You just enter in the server's port, IP, and password and you're good to go. The software also allows for you to send in admin commands, and a list of those supported are in the readme.

The program can also be used in conjunction with the previously released Player Reader to do some more advanced operations or work around some limitations in the chat reader. That can be found here. The author appears well on his way to making a fully fledged server administration suite for BF2, which is always very useful to server admins. Good luck!

Call of Duty 4: House 2 House
My first map for Call of Duty 4 using Radiant. Its inspired by the book "House to House" by David Bellavia (Real life story of a former Army Infantry Staff Sergeant who served in the First Infantry Division fighting insurgents in Fallujah)and features THE specific house from the book.

This map is not huge, but most of the houses have a few rooms and a couple of floors. Lots of places to hide and great for close urban firefights. Good for 6-12 players. This is the FINAL RELEASE version. I spent a couple weeks polishing and adding content until I maxed out the models and the texture count. I would add more detail if I could.

The Long Winter Garden is a small symmetric map designed for CTF (8 spawns per team), but which also has DM (14) and TDM (14) spawn points. There are respawning flamethrowers, panzerfausts and FG42s. Two tanks and one jeep per side.

Its a freezing and bleak morning. The German and American troops wake up to a fresh covering of snow. They face each other across the wooded terrain; mounting their tanks and Flak guns, ready for one last battle. The sky is grey and a light snow falls as flames burst from flamethrowers and the air is filled with bullets and shells. Its down to this; which flag will fall.

Company of Heroes: A Forrest City
About the file
First-time mapper Sam Los provides us with a forrest based multiplayer map designed for 4 players. It features houses, water, pretty much what you would expect from a small settling in the woods.

Staff Impression
As many first-time maps, the result is not what you'd consider graphically stunning. A bit of variety in the texture placement certainly won't hurt for further map releases. That being said, the map scores at the core, which is gameplay. You will find a lot of elements in this, ranging from the defense of tactical points, open battles as well as close house battle. To win this map, tactics will have to be combined.

Empire at War: Kuat Campaign Prolouge MapPack
Two maps, one campaign. One map in the blackness of space, the other in the blackness of night. Space: Good for the rebels, lots of stuff to blow up. It doesn't do anything except allow for large ships to move through. Other than that, it's well balanced and fun. Land: It's so dark. There's no satellite for the rebels, so you can't see the enemy. I've seen night maps done before (Naboo Nights) that have given the appearance of night without being so dark. I recommend making that change.

Far Cry: FearCry
The Fear Cry demo so far includes two fully playable levels. The complete mod will include 4-6 levels. The author has tested the mod several times in different situations and believes that he's managed to eliminate any bugs.

As regards installation; Fear Cry requires the game Far Cry patched to version 1.4. Due to the size of the mod the author has used the RAR compression format. If you don't have a program capable of opening an RAR file then we'd recommend 7zip (http://www.7zip.org). After opening the downloaded file, you will see a folder "FearCry", which needs to be moved to the "Mods" folder in the FarCry directory.

Your mission is to deliver the consignment to the appointed place. It's not easy, because it leads through enemy territory and enemies try to thwart transport. The consignment is also vulnerable to shocks and the road is long, slow and very dangerous. It will be hard work, a large portion will be spent fighting, and thinking logically. If you have a problem with buggy damage or lack of fuel, there are places where you can refuel or repair the buggy. You can also refuel buggy from finded canisters. Good luck and have fun.

Halo CE: The_Library
The_Library is a c20 modification that encoporates all four tiers (or levels, if you prefer) of the c20 level. The only place where there is enough light to see is the third tier, only availible in CTF.

Slayer takes place on the first and second tiers, the first for the main conflicts, the second for sniping or trying to be sneaky, as there is a hallway that leads all the way around to the other base.

Capture the Flag takes place on the third tier, where the Red team has several resources availibe to them to defend their base, but at the same time, highly vunerable to long-range attacks. Blue team on the other hand, have a single confined hallway that can act as a catalyst against the Reds. However, they cannot access their vehicles as readily as Red team can, and as such, at a slight disadvantage.

Jedi Knight III: D SKULL airship
Alright, so first off, massive apologies to DLEGION, as the recent server changes have made processing this file rather difficult and slow. However, we're in much better circumstances now, so here goes:

Once again, DLEGION unleashes a massive mortar of a map whose content shakes the FPS and makes you just go "Wauuuuuggh @_@" So, 133 MB, and whaddya get? A HUGE, pretty much luxurious cruiser. Quite RPable, although the ship is so incredibly expansive, it might confuse the hell out of you. At this point, I have little to no choice but to pretty much take it deck by deck..

Deck 5 - Alright, so before I begin, each deck has a teleport that can warp the player to Decks 1, 2, 4, and 5. Deck 3 is only accessible from Deck 4, and there's no teleport from there. As you journey throughout the ships, expect a lot of NPC bikini gals about, as I guess the corporation that owns this ship likes to employ a lot of women. Deck 5 is essentially the pleasure deck, adorned with a bar, foozball table, hot tub, honeymoon bed, TV, and a holo-deck. The holo-deck takes you to two places: A beach, and and a ruined castle scape in the mountains. These places, I'll admit, are pretty neat, but a word of advice to JA+ users: DO NOT GRAPPLE! As soon as you hit "use" to disconnect, you'll exit the holograph immediately, as the entire room seems to hold one giant usable entity.

Jedi Knight III: The Pit - Jedi Academy
Any veteran JK2 player who's screwed around in singleplayer knows about..."The Pit" the classic level where it's just you and Tavion. Amusingly enough, back when I was first playing the game(having not finished JK2 SP,) I thought Tavion was the final boss...and had welder's goggles on, but enough of my misguided views, ONTO MY SLIGHTLY MORE GUIDED ONES.

This is essentially a JK3 rebuild of the Pit, which actually looks pretty good, sans the massive JK2 texture missing again. The size is about on par with the original JK2 counterpart, but the lighting is far less oppressive. The music...well, this time around, there IS music, as the Pit had no music. Music's kinda neat, although I don't know if it's thematically appropriate, but whatever, it's the Pit, do what ya want with it >_>

Jedi Knight III: Strike on Nar Shaddaa
...and several butcher's aprons. And now for something completely different: A man with a siege map. stick out tongue We haven't had a siege map in a while... It's a shame really, because I find that they can make excellent sandbox (Lugormod or Makermod, your pick) maps due to their being so large. Sadly, this map has proven to be a disappointment in that department, being a little too small for my taste.

As a siege map, however...

I can't really speak for what the actual gameplay will be like here, having no way to gather up testers within a reasonable amount of time. At the same time though, the author has stated that gameplay was the main focus here, so it should be up there in quality. The texturing, while a little simplistic, is effective. You can easily tell if you are inside or outside (even when ignoring the outside 'vistas'), you aren't blinded by horrid texturing, and doors/paths are obvious. (Helped somewhat by the arrows on the floor.)

Singapore is a medium sized urban map which is a remake of the Moh: Rising Sun map 'Death in the Orient'. The map suits games of between 8-20 players. In Objective the Allied players have to capture the important documents held near the Axis base at all costs. They do not have to return the documents to the Allied base, but simply grab them. The Axis have to defend the documents by running down the time or killing all of the Allies.

The map works in Moh:AA, Moh Spearhead and Moh Breakthrough and has been tested in all 3 games. A few errors have been found in testing of this map, and they among other details can be found in the readme file. This is my first map, so please download it and give it a go. Thanks.

Star Wars Battlefront 2: Naboo: Theed
This is another republication of an older version of a current map by Marvel4, in the vein of the recent re-do of Mos Eisley.

My thoughts re: that map all basically apply here, they are, in sum, "nice but probably unnecessary." The differences between old Naboo and stock Naboo are even smaller than the differences between old Mos Eisley and stock Mos Eisley - all we see here is really a skydome texture change and a re-placement of a CP. Likewise, this version is included with the Conversion Pack, and some of you who have that may not necessarily want or need a replacement.

Star Wars Battlefront 2: Tatooine: Mos Eisley
This is another SWBF1 - SWBF2 conversion by Marvel4. Its purpose is somewhat suspect, since the differences between the SWBF1 version and the stock version are trivial.

This one has a slightly different ground texture, and it loads in vehicles that the current version does not. The first is obviously just an aesthetic detail - maybe you like it more, maybe less, probably it won't make a huge difference to you. The second has a slightly larger impact, but I think it was smart of the developers to remove the AT-ST/AAT to make the map a little more balanced. It's not a huge deal, and it can be fun to tramp around in your walker - but by the same token, it's not a huge deal.

Star Wars Battlefront 2: Tropicanae
"Tropicanae" is, as you might guess from the title, a tropical map. It's the first map of the author, Thunderstorm025, and while there are a number of first-map hurdles it does clear, it runs smack-dab into the hurdle of authorial ambition being bigger than the knowledge of the tools.

The basic setup of the map is four islands surrounded by water - two "main" islands, with three CPs apiece, and two secondary islands with one CP each. Several vehicles are available to move between each of the islands, but the water is too deep to get there on foot. It's a nice idea, but that last part (the "vehicle-transit-only" part) is where the map sees its biggest problem.

A lot of first-time authors (myself included) make the mistake of conceptualizing a map that really only works well if every AI unit were to be controlled by an actual human. This is not and will never be the case, and because of that, if you don't plan your map around what your AI can do, then you're really shooting yourself in the foot, design-wise. In this case, not only are you limiting island transit to the handful of vehicles you have available (which means that you're going to have a lot of units waiting around), but you're expecting the AI that use those vehicles to succeed in moving in and taking over command posts.

The Scorched Ashes

Enjoy this map in a 1v1 or 2v2 battle set back on Char. Feel free to ask anything related to map and such. Updated since the last version with fixed starting locations. Final version of map is this.

UPDATE #4 (all versions are only present somewhere else). The main idea with the map is about a completely destroyed/consumed area south of Char where a river once were up till the Swarm came and took control of planet Char.

Team Fortress 2: CTF 1Fort (Beta 3)
1fort takes the idea of two enemy bases built absurdly close to one another a step further by actually housing them in the same building. The two teams' Intelligence offices are separated by a single pane of indestructible bulletproof glass, so your goal is always within eyesight.

# New in b3:
- added sewer entry hatch model, - changed game mode to payload (user request), - built a pile of rocks, - dug a tunnel, - changed game mode back to ctf, - added some new signs and textures, - changed tree model in courtyard, - outdoor soundscape more night-like (hoot-hoo!)

Armada 2: Alternate Reality D7 Class Pack
The D-7 was the workhorse for the Empire from the late 2240s well into the 2270s. With several different variations and upgrades, the D-7 was able to keep up with the advancement made by the Federation. In the late 2260s, a technology exchange with the Romulan Star Empire, expanded the D-7s role as the Romlulan Stormbird. In the exchange, the Klingons received the cloaking device. In 2269, Captain James Kirk took the Enterprise, under the guise of going rogue, into the Romulan Neutral Zone and was able to steal one of the cloaking devices. This allowed the Federation to develop a means to detect a cloaked ship. Though the detection was flawed (detection wasn't made till a cloaked ship was upon the intended victim), it was still enough of a deterrent that neither empires attempted a full scale invasion.

Bridge Commander: FastProbe
Presenting the FastProbe, an incredibly fast probe using the standard probe.
It's a separate probe from the regular Probe and must be launched via SLF out a shuttlebay. It has a very small "crew" (in fact, the only one in it is supposed to be you) and can be captured and boarded. Thus it's fully compatible with DS9FX Xtended!

Also, I have included the option to select the regular Probe as an NPS (Non-Player Ship) along with the FastProbe. I have also tweaked the stock Probe so it is not only more balanced, it can be remote controlled via Fleet Orders mod or the QB Extension (is that the name?) mod. However I am warning you not to transport or capture the regular Probe as it will result in a CTD, this is why it's not available to be played as.

The Vesta class had entered service by September 2380. The class is named after the Roman goddess of hearth and home and only seven ships of her class are currently in servise and are named after the seven hills of Rome (Aventine, Caelian, Capitoline, Esquiline, Palatine, Quirinal and Viminal).

The class was designed as a multi-mission explorer with state of the art technologies and a number of experimental technologies, including quantum slipstream drive, mark XII phaser cannons, a multidimensional wave-function analysis module, a sympathetic fermion transceiver, and a chroniton integrator to take sensor readings several seconds into the future when the ship was using its slipstream drive.

Flight Simulator X: Airbus A380 Quantas (FSX)
We adore this aircraft the model has lots of lovely moving parts especially when played in high resolution.

Reviewing this aircraft is easy, its flies realistically, handles sluggishly, you quickly notice the lag between pushing the joystick and the aircraft responding! Don't even get me started on this Mammoth's turning circle. While testing this aircraft aircraft at EGKK Gatwick Intl Airport it seemed at one point as though the runway simply wasn't long enough to propel this giant into the sky, landing on the other hand is definitely the challenge for this aircraft.

We Challenge you!! Once you have mastered flying this aircraft and landing at larger INTL Airports why not try something a little smaller like EGNM - Leeds Bradford Airport in the UK or even EGNX East Midlands..

Jedi Knight III: AT-AT Driver (2.5)
Ah yes, the classic AT-AT pilot. Probably the most tempting of targets to reskin onto the TIE pilot model. Three times, I have now seen this happen. All have failed to get it 100% accurate. Why? The eyes on the TIE Pilot helmet differ vastly from the AT-AT pilots. The eyes on the former have wider lenses to compensate for vision space. I would argue they could just have a full visor instead of two lenses, but since they have such a confined viewport to look out of, it hardly matters. Regardless, the AT-AT pilots sport the traditional stormtrooper lenses, for some reason or another, so that's why It's a Trap(TM)

Despite this, this version gets closer and more interactive than the other two attempts. Attempt #2 was TK-962's(whereas #1 was tried by JP-30 in JK2,) as is this #3, but we've still got a ways to go before it's even close to accurate. So, first off, let's see what you got right:

- The helmet, sans the lenses - The gloves - The gray in the jumpsuit

Jedi Knight III: Goldentrooper
Yet another peculiar skin by TK-962, though this one's certainly more shiny.

As you probably guessed, the main attraction is a gold plated stormtrooper. What you may not have guessed is that this overwrites your default stormtrooper, which seems slightly unpleasant. The team skins are simple red and blue stormtroopers, so they're not much to talk about. If you feel like pimping out your trooper though, this'd be the one to do it with.

Jedi Knight III: The Force Unleashed II - Starkiller - Skin Pack - SP Support
Woah, the number of TFU things I seem to be reviewing today is staggering.

Today, unleashed_dark_force brings us two Galen Marek skins. While not exactly the very first one, atleast it uses a good model, right?

Quote:
These two reskins are made so that the model will look like the Clone Starkiller from Force Unleashed 2 a little. I know it's not a good job but I think you will like it.

These two aren't really bad skins, I'm just saying it's not the best Starkiller out there. But hey, it beats quite a few of them. Gaze upon the screenshots and see for yourself if you prefer this one over the dozens of others out there.

Jedi Knight III: Uriziel and Beliar's Claw
The sword. Perhaps one of the oldest weapons still made and used today, even if not in a war-like capacity. This mod brings 2 swords to the table today: Uriziel, and Beliar's Claw. Both are from a series of games called 'Gothic'. Both are large, two-handed weapons, with Uriziel flaunting a large blue gem in the middle of the blade towards the hilt, and Beliar's Claw parading a large skull with horns between the blade and the hilt.

The design of both swords may not be my cup of tea, but they'd sure add to anyone's fantasy sword collection, even in real life. I can't say much on the accuracy, having never played any of the Gothic games, and having only reference pictures to go on. But from what I can tell, they're pretty much spot on. The model quality is very good, one only 2 noticeable errors. Both are on Beliar's Claw, and both are very minor.

Knights of the Old Republic: Revan's Death Improved
I KotOR, I loved the cutscenes, but they had their flaws. Most of them had brilliant soundtracks, but one cutscene (Revan's Death) didn't have music that matched up to the others. Inspired by a fanmade KotOR movie, which changed the music of some cutscenes, I decided to try it myself. I found the right music (the end bit of Anakin's Dark Deeds from the Star Wars Episode III soundtrack), and went to work. In my opinion, the new music makes me think of a "hopeless battle" scenario, which fit perfectly, because the battle in the cutscene was pretty hopeless for the Jedi. While changing the music, I noticed that the original sounds were part of the original soundtrack. So, I decided that I would change any sounds that I couldn't find a way to keep. In the end, I ended up not only changing the music, but also some of the sounds. Also, as an added touch I gave Bastila's dialogue an echo, making the vision more dream-like.

With the system not working, the site staff has pretty much its hands tied!

Besides which reminds me of the elite series site, it takes several days up to a week or longer before files are posted.
I've been told there is no need for more staff, currently Luke is alone there and he seams to have very little time, or interest.

No offence Luke but it takes you quite a while, if you are short on time tell us, we understand that, but there is no communication when ever there is something going on...

You have to remember though that this is posted on all of the network sites smile, even though sometimes I wonder if people even read this frown, (since it only ever gets one or two comments). I should point out though all of the problems haven't been ignored though Filefront and Break are listening and do know about all of the issues that all of the sites have (e.g. Polls, Featured Files etc...)
