Filefront News: Everything you think about graphics is stupid

This is another edition of “,” a weekly opinion piece column on FileFront. Check back every week for more).

Graphics are important. They’ve always been important, and they’ve always been on the frontlines of the console war battlefield, as platform holders endlessly vie to gain the visual upper hand over the competition. Graphics are among the most tangible things that consumers can evaluate before making a purchasing decision, so having a game that looks great, especially in the HD generation, is a crucial part to selling a product to the average gamer. Visuals are important, but they aren’t everything, and even though we all seem to know that, we are always so incredibly ready to forget it.

There is a worrying trend in the industry of judging a game on graphics and nothing else. Not only that, but our idea of what constitutes high quality visuals has become so incredibly skewed that I believe we’ve lost sight of what really makes a fun game. Even worse, I worry that this is bleeding over into developers as well, where graphics come first and gameplay comes as a distant second. I’d argue that this is bad for the gamers, but it’s the gamers who are encouraging a culture that assumes a good game is identified by good graphics.

Filefront News: FileFront is Changing to GameFront

Dear FileFront readers,
For a decade, FileFront has been the #1 destination for PC gaming. You know this, we know this, your dog knows this. Building on that solid foundation, we grew editorially this year. We’re still the top destination for demos, patches and mods, but we’ve also become a solid source for gaming news, reviews, walkthroughs and features. We’ve changed.

Because of these changes, it just doesn’t feel right to call the site FileFront anymore. Files are still a core aspect of what we do, but we have outgrown the limitations of that brand.

So…*drumroll*… I’m excited to announce that on November 30, FileFront will become GameFront! This is a very big step for us, and we’re excited to (finally) unveil our plans to everyone.

Please click the link below for more smile

Filefront News: 2010 Video Game Gift Guide

This is a weird holiday season for me so far, because I’m considerably less dirt poor (but still dirt poor) than I have been in recent years now that Break is paying me to write things such as what I’m writing now. So when me moms sent me the email she sends every year around this time asking about some gift items I’d like I was finally able to name some things I want to have rather than things I really need to have. (My list in previous years usually consisted of things like “rent check” and “gift card for the power company”)

Anyway, here we have a list of games from 2010 you should either buy for people or have people buy for you. Just trying to be helpful, damn it.

* Microsoft Points cards/PSN cards/Nintendo Points cards
* Mass Effect 2
* NBA 2K11
* Fallout: New Vegas
* NBA Jam
* Gran Turismo 5
* Super Mario Galaxy 2
* Red Dead Redemption
* Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
* Goldeneye 007 (wii)
* Final Fantasy XIII

Filefront News: Another Assassin’s Creed in 2011, Ubisoft Confirms

Sick of Assassin’s Creed yet? According to Ubisoft’s sales marks, the answer is a resounding “no!” And that’s why the company has confirmed it will release another AC game next year.

According to MCV, AC: Brotherhood has already topped 1 million sales, despite being only about a week old. That pushes the total sales for the whole AC franchise (which has games on the major consoles, plus spin-0ffs on the PSP, Nintendo DS and Apple’s iOS devices) up to 20 million units.

So basically, yeah, Ubisoft wants to make another AC next year, especially since its stock tanked right before Brotherhood. Assassin’s Creed is the company’s financial saving grace at the moment, it seems. Ubisoft Yves Guillemot said something to cryptic that effect just before Brotherhood dropped, as well.

Filefront News: Axl Rose Suing Activision For Putting Slash in Guitar Hero III

Axl Rose is pretty upset that Activision featured former bandmate Slash in Guitar Hero III.The Guns N’ Roses frontman is suing Activision for $20 million for its inclusion of Slash in the game after the band licensed the use of its song, “Welcome to the Jungle,” supposedly on the condition that the former GnR guitarist wouldn’t be associated with it.

It seems “not associated with it” translated to Activision as being “the face of the game on the cover and in all advertising.” The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court yesterday, claims Activision lied about Slash’s role in the game in order to get GnR to license “Welcome to the Jungle.” According to the Hollywood Reporter, Rose tried to back out of the licensing deal after he found out Velvet Revolver and Slash would make it into Guitar Hero II, but Activision told him the inclusion of Slash was for demo purposes at a trade show. Then GH III came out, and Rose called his lawyer.

Filefront News: Conduit 2 Trailer Makes Cryptic Statements

Happy Thanksgiving, from Sega — here’s a new trailer from the upcoming release of Conduit 2 for the Wii. This new video doesn’t show off much in the way of gameplay, but it does have some cryptic narrating going on that gives you an idea of the spooky twists the story might be taking in the next installment of the series.

Last we heard, Conduit 2 was delayed until after the New Year, after being originally scheduled to drop earlier this month. At least this trailer makes it seem like the wait might be worth it.

Filefront News: Dead Before Dawn Too Released

Earlier this year we reported on Dead Before Dawn, a Left 4 Dead mod that recreates the setting of the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake in scary, OCD detail. A mere 2 months later, the creators are back with an update that instantly renders your previous copy hopelessly obsolete. A warm round of applause please for Dead Before Dawn Too.

DBDT is nearly identical to the previous game, except based on Left 4 Dead 2. Despite the misleading title, it does not feature talking babies, but it does have new mini games, improved graphics, and tons more zombies. Fend off the attacking sequel zombies by grabbing a copy here.

Filefront News: Dune Wars (Civ IV Mod) Version 1.9: Now With Bigger Sandworms!

Civilization V may now be out for both Mac and PC, but Civ IV remains a beloved classic, so no doubt it will be flogged by modders Half-Life 2 style until the last remaining electron has been deleted. Which is fine by me since it means more goodies like Dune Wars, an ongoing Civ IV mod based on Frank Herbert’s ridiculously convoluted, awesome-in-theory-boring-in-reality series of sci fi novels about space Bedouin drug user worm people.

Dune wars plays like a standard Civ IV game -you found your city and expand across the vast planet building your empire. The catch is that the planet is a vast desert, and the cities and outposts you found are devoted to collecting moisture and spice. Also, random events include giant sandworms like the one above who roam the desert and tear up all your shizz. Luckily, no Sting and no David Lynch. And it just got a big update with the release of version 1.9. 1.9 includes new units, new building, improved effects and general tweaks and improvements to make it more stable and fun.

You think you’ve seen crazily unlucky or humiliating deaths before, but this one falls squarely into the “God hates you” category. This guy was probably so stunned he couldn’t even spew random disparaging racial epithets into his headset.

Filefront News: EA Boss Wants to Kick Gran Turismo 5′s Ass

My personal favorite kind of corporate bickering is the kind we have here today. And what we have here today is EA senior VP Patrick Soderland taking some potshots at Gran Turismo 5 (holy s**t that game is out tomorrow) in an attempt to prop up EA’s own NFS: Shift franchise. Let’s see what he had to say to CVG.

If you compare Shift and Gran Turismo, I actually do see Shift as a direct competitor to Gran Turismo for sure.

What does make sense to me… I think they have a very sterile, almost car collecting type of product where that’s mainly what we do, and I think we can offer something different. Our idea is that if we can offer the most authentic driving experience and portray what it feels like being inside a race car, then I think that’s where we can excel and where we absolutely will beat them. That I know for sure.

Filefront News: How to Fix the Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death

While Microsoft may have moved on and completely re-designed the Xbox 360 to avoid heat problems like the Red Ring of Death (aka RROD) many of us still have the old 360 models. These old systems are prone to failure without any warning. One day you’ll be ready to jump into a game of Halo:Reach and BAM! The red ring will appear around your power button and the system will throw up a cryptic error code. So, to stem the red tide of disappointment we offer direction on how to fix the Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death.

Difficulty: Intermediate

* A torx 12, 7 and 6 screwdrivers to remove screws from the 360′s case
* A 1/4 inch wrench or socket to remove the X-Clamp posts from the heatsink
* Small Phillips screwdriver
* Small flat-head screwdriver
* Arctic Silver thermal compound
* a Small cleaning cloth
* A Thin metal stick

Filefront News: Imagine the Look on this Black Ops Player’s Face (VIDEO)

Why is it that every video coming out of Call of Duty: Black Ops just shows sad players getting totally annihilated through no fault of their own?

I’m no expert, but it’s probably because it’s hilarious.

Filefront News: NBA Elite 11 Got the Axe Because It Sucked Ass

You know the story. NBA Elite 11 was to be a complete revamp of the NBA Live franchise. The demo came out and everyone hated it. EA pulled Elite from the release schedule. EA cancelled it altogether. EA gave NBA Jam a full retail release on 360 and PS3 to apologize.

All that, obviously, meant the game was bad enough that they didn’t want to ruin this new brand by actually releasing it. EA has now officially admitted that. Here are some quotes that came from the mouth of EA Sports Important Person Andrew Wilson when he spoke to IGN:

Ultimately, it was just going to be a bad game. I think that the goal of reinventing how people play basketball games and giving the gamer infinitely more control over the outcomes that appear on the screen in front of them, was something that just needed to take longer than we had. We knew the goal was aggressive. But at the same time, we believed it was an important enough goal for the gamer, who’d been playing basketball games in a very similar way for a very long time.

Filefront News: Pirate The Witcher 2 and You Could Get Fined

CD Projekt is an awesome company. Not only are they behind The Witcher series of RPGs, they’re also responsible for the existence of Good Old Games, the home of DRM-free classic games.

At the same time, they’ve come out quite firmly against piracy, and they’re backing that up with a little steel. Speaking with Eurogamer, CD Projekt co-founder Marcin Iwiński had a bit to say about how they’re addressing piracy on the upcoming RPG, The Witcher 2.

Of course we’re not happy when people are pirating our games, so we are signing with legal firms and torrent sneaking companies. In quite a few big countries, when people are downloading it illegally they can expect a letter from a legal firm saying, ‘Hey, you downloaded it illegally and right now you have to pay a fine.’

Filefront News: Report: Elder Scrolls V Is In the Works

Eurogamer says they’ve got a source who tells them that Bethesda is presently working on Elder Scrolls V and that actors are in the studio doing some recording right now and that the game will be a direct sequel to Oblivion. Is that all? I think that’s all. This is probably good news (I say “probably” because I never much cared for Oblivion), but I’ve sorta assumed they’ve been working on this for a while, because Bethesda hasn’t released a game they’ve developed since Fallout 3, and they haven’t announced any new projects. They’ve obviously been working on something in secret, and it might as well be a new Elder Scrolls.

Oh, and this is also good, because it means the internet doesn’t have to make up Elder Scrolls stories now. Not saying it won’t happen, but it’s no longer necessary, I think.

Filefront News: Sony Ericsson CEO Says They Might Be Working on that PSPhone We Already Knew About

So in all the ruckus caused by the PSP2 stuff, everybody forgot about the alleged Playstation Phone. Well, I didn’t forget about it, but I didn’t have any reason to talk about it because there hasn’t been any news about it in a while, and even if there were news it still wouldn’t be as big a deal as the PSP2. And Sony said that s**t, pictured above, is totally fake and not in any way real. But, yeah, we’ve got news.

Sony Ericsson CEO Bert Nordberg (nice assonance) talked to The Wall Street Journal, and they, because they’re pretty good at their jobs, asked him about the alleged device. Nordberg came short of admitting that the thing exists, but he totally wants you to think it does. Here’s one quote: “There’s a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere.”

Hahaha. Anyway, they also asked him why it is that, being Sony Ericsson and all, they had never made a gaming-oriented phone. And Nordberg came back with: “I haven’t dug into that history, but the future might be brighter.”

Filefront News: Sony is Getting Super Serious About 3D on PS3

At this week’s Develop Conference in Liverpool, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s Mick Hocking spoke to Develop (the publication) and told them Sony is really gearing up for 3D on PS3 on a large scale. We’ve known this in spirit for a while now, but nobody’s really made it plain just how large their efforts truly are. The point of this post is that Hocking did, in fact, finally do that.

Hocking says Sony is preparing 3D on 20 games just at Sony. He says that, including those, 50 games are being prepped for 3D. In terms of what that means, well, I couldn’t tell you. I would, however, venture to guess that those 20 Sony games are all the games Sony is developing, and it would seem likely that many of these titles are PSN games rather than full retail releases. category. This guy was probably so stunned he couldn’t even spew random disparaging racial epithets into his headset.

Filefront News: Ubisoft Toronto Working on Splinter Cell 6

Ubisoft Toronto Managing Director Jade Raymond has confirmed it: the studio is working on a new Splinter Cell title to follow up with last year’s Conviction. As Eurogamer points out, this is the first time Raymond has actually referred to the project as Splinter Cell 6, although she did say in May that the project retains the core team from Splinter Cell: Conviction.

Raymond also said in a promo video that Ubisoft Toronto is looking to expand to at least 800 employees over the next decade. Another 83 people have been hired this year, and development on Splinter Cell 6 is already ongoing. The new Splinter Cell title is one of five AAA titles Raymond said she wants to make in Toronto simultaneously.

Filefront News: Wahlberg Confirms Role as Nathan Drake in Upcoming Uncharted Movie

Remember when we heard that David O. Russell‘s casting choices for Sony’s upcoming Uncharted movie could include Mark Wahlberg, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, and we all laughed because that sounded like the worst possible cast for a movie about finding treasure and knowing history and gunfights and climbing things?

Turns out it’s all true.

Wahlberg will be Nathan Drake, groan, and not Nathan Fillion, obviously the best man on the planet to play the role. The star of The Happening and Max Payne confirmed as much to MTV News.

Company of Heroes: This is it
Hello everyone,

It has been 1 year, 7 months and 24 days since the saving of FileFront from the crashdown of Ziff Davis and our team taking over the administration of the site. As of today, I will no longer be the site manager of CompanyOfHeroesFiles.

This is all but an easy step for me as you guys really helped me growing into the community and made me feel at home around here. I would like to thank all and everyone of you for this as well as for keeping the site alive and happy, without you a lot of things we achieved would have never been possible.

It is unknown to me who will manage this site in the future as CanadianBorg is no longer with the staff either, I wish him/her all the best though and great success. smile

Thank you all once more, it has been a great time. Farewell frown
