GTA Liberty City Stories - PS2 - Reviews - Site News

Several reviews for GTA Liberty City Stories for the Sony Playstation 2 have been posted on several sites, including Gamespot, 1 UP and IGN.

IGN Review
Quote:
- The first title Rockstar Games developed for the PSP set a new standard for handhelds. No real surprise there. Its previous efforts, mainly the seminal GTA III, did pretty much the same thing for the PS2 back in 2001. Each presented virtual playgrounds bursting with crime, corruption and intrigue -- and they each flaunted an overwhelming sense of style and sleaze. It's a blend that proved very successful, both from a critical and commercial standpoint.

Of course, having such a detailed world on a handheld system made it all the more impressive, and so, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (LCS) rightfully earned praise as a landmark achievement. No PSP game before or since has matched its range or flexibility. In the eight months following its release, developers have shipped numerous titles, both on the PSP and PS2, and while this doesn't affect LCS on the PSP, it certainly does on the console side. The reason being is that every game available on the PSP still comes short of GTA's depth. Certain titles may definitely outclass it (Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror and Daxter come to mind), but even those don't match its epic sense of scale.

It will, no doubt, be terribly fashionable to make jokes at the expense of Liberty City Stories on the PS2 over the next few weeks. The fact that it's a handheld game that has, in effect, been dumbed down slightly in its transition to a "real" console will probably be the subject of endless podcasts, blogs, and editorials. To be fair, the PS2 version is only $20. (Which raises a whole host of other questions -- like, "Why is the same game on the PSP $49.99?") So, if you're not one of the 900,000 people who bought the portable version, but are one of the 12 million rabid GTA fans out there -- it should go some way to scratching that particular type of itch. Cheaply.

Gamespot Review
Quote:
The Grand Theft Auto series and the PlayStation 2 have gone hand in hand, which each game debuting on the PS2 before it travels to other consoles. That all changed with the release of last year's side story, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories. This game, designed to take advantage of the PSP's hardware, was an impressive technical feat, managing to pack in a lot of what made the "big" GTA games so memorable. But it fell short in a few key spots, most notably the story, the characters, and the series' biting sense of style and satire. That stuff was easy to overlook when you could carry Liberty City around in your back pocket. But on the PS2, where you can compare it directly to the three Grand Theft Auto games that have appeared there, the whole package is significantly less interesting, even considering the PS2 port's budget price.

Didn't do so well on the PS2 so if I were you, I would only rent the game and not buy it. If you got a PSP, just by the PSP version, it is what is definetely preferred and what's best, Portable.
