Gamefront News: If You Know What This Is, You Are Old.

No boys and girls, we haven’t always lived in the future. Once upon a time, before USB, flash memory, storage measured in terraflops, RAM measured in GB, image resolution in the gigapixel range and flat panel monitors, computing was a big pain in the ass.

See, before Hard Drives became affordable enough to be standard with all home computers, software came on these things called Flexible Magnetic Disks, AKA “floppy” disks. These easy-to-lose but surprisingly durable little guys used to do everything, even the storage and running of the earliest versions of your computer’s OS. No, seriously, imagine needing 12 of these things to install Windows. Or dealing with 3 of them to play Sim City 2000.

8 Inch (the 8-track version):

5 1/4 inch (the cassette):

And 3 1/2 Inch (the CD):

You might laugh, but this little disk held a STAGGERING 1.45 MB of data. That is almost half of an Mp3, enough to make it all the way to “Tonight I’m Fuc-” before Enrique Iglesias is cut off. And the devices you inserted them into were called the A: and B: drives. When hard drives became ubiquitous, they were labled C:, in deference to the order in which the majority of consumers experienced the tech. After floppy disks were largely discontinued during the 90s, the tradition of calling the hard drive C: continued.

Gamefront News: Anti-Gaming Study Flawed, ESA Says

A study about the mental health effects of video gaming on children set to appear in upcoming issue of the journal Pediatrics contains numerous flaws, according to the Electronic Software Association.

The study was conducted by noted gaming critic and previous conductor of flawed studies Douglas Gentile. He claims the study shows a link between video game use and juvenile mental health issues in Singapore, but the ESA has released a warning against the study and its claims, citing numerous places where things get a little shaky.

Gentile, an Iowa State associate professor of psychology and a developmental psychologist who studies the effects the media can have on people consuming it, has taken part in numerous studies about exposure to video game violence leading to real violence in players (mostly children). He generally is a critic of video games and has published studies about their increasing aggression in their players, but other scientists haven’t been able to replicate his results. The verdict is still out as to whether games can make you violent (beyond the verdict we can reach using common sense, that is). He has studied the effects of video games on learning, though, and says gamers make better surgeons, which another very small study recently backed.

Gamefront News: Call of Duty: Black Ops First Strike DLC Trailer

Back before Christmas, we told you that the first Black Ops DLC map pack was coming on February 1. It’s still a XBox 360 timed exclusive, and it’s still $15 (1200 MS Points).

We’ve got the first look at some of the maps in a brand new trailer from the folks at Treyarch. Here’s a refresher on the list of maps the DLC will include:

* Discovery – Antarctic German research station, abandoned from World War II.
* Stadium – Hockey rink in northeastern United States.
* Berlin Wall – Takes place at Checkpoint Charlie. Is a battle between East and West Berlin.
* Kowloon – Inspired from the single-player campaign based off of Kowloon city in China. It’s a rooftop map.
* Ascension – Zombie map

Gamefront News: Call of Duty Multiplayer Now ‘Unplayable’, Thanks To PS3 Hack

This won’t come as a shock to anyone, but remember that shockingly successful PS3 root key hack? Turns out GameFront’s Phil Owen was right: Pandora’s Box is open, and it looks like it contained nothing but dicks. Who have invaded PSN and filled it full of cheapo cheats that have rendered Call of Duty’s various multiplayers functionally unplayable.

Joystiq reports that legit players are absolutely fuming over this, and for good reason. Unfair advantages abound, legit players are finding their stats deleted and getting their asses unfairly kicked, and generally, the only people enjoying themselves are the jerks lording it over everyone else. So it’s basically like High School. Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling weighed in Over at their official forums, acknowledging the problem, but unfortunately, also advising the CoD community that they are effectively screwed for the foreseeable future:

Games rely on the security of the encryption on the platforms they’re played on, therefore; updates to the game through patches will not resolve this problem, unless the security exploit itself is resolved on the platform. Regretfully, Call of Duty games are receiving the bulk of the hacker’s attention, due to its high player counts and popularity. However, the number of legitimate players severely outweighs the bad apples.

Gamefront News: Dead Space 2: Your Mom Hates It

If you watched any TV this weekend, you probably saw the new campaign EA is running for Dead Space 2: Your mom hates it, so it must be cool.

It seems that EA got a bunch of moms to watch scenes from Dead Space 2 as part of a purported focus group, recorded their reactions, and made a commercial out of it. It’s actually a great little ad campaign, but I wonder how all the moms felt about it.

Anyway, they’ve posted a nice little behind the scenes video to go along with it, complete with commentary from a number of the moms used in the commercial. Check out the commercial below, and the behind-the-scenes clip right below it.

Gamefront News: Deus Ex: Human Revolution is 25 Hours Long

There’s been quite a lot of buzz around Deus Ex: Human Revolution lately. We’ve seen some truly epic trailers, and been promised a lot in terms of gameplay.

In the latest issue of PC Gamer, Eidos Montreal drops another tidbit that will excite fans of the series a fair bit. The game will take around 25 hours to complete. Producer David Anfossi said that most testers can’t complete the game in a six-day work week, and then elaborated, saying,

So far with them playing about six hours every day, most of them don’t complete the game.

A 25 hour title is certainly a welcome change from games like Call of Duty. More commonly, we get games that are less than ten hours long (and sometimes less that 5!). Anfossi added that he’s seen a positive reaction to the depth of strategy in the game, and that it tends to make players “a bit more creative” as they play through.

Gamefront News: Dreamcast Collection Is Confirmed and Nobody Cares

Back in November when word of the Dreamcast Collection began to spread, I presciently suggested that “Likelihood is that it’ll be some stuff that’s already/will be available as downloads, like Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi and Soul Calibur.” And I was totally right, which makes this whole thing not at all exciting unless you like to buy in bulk in order to save a few bucks.

So Soul Calibur is not part of the package, but Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi are, along with Sega Bass Fishing and Space Channel 5 Part 2. Not necessarily bad choices for the pack, but these have already seen the light of day in the HD era, and so we don’t care that this pack exists. Couldn’t Sega have at least called this like “Dreamcast Collection Volume 1″ or something to give us some hope for something cool later?

The pack comes out February 22 on the 360 and PC.

Gamefront News: Exclusive Homefront DLC Headed to XBox 360

Up in New York City today, THQ is holding a showcase. In the process of “showcasing” Homefront, they also announced that the XBox 360 version of the upcoming shooter will be receiving an exclusive map as DLC.

We don’t have a ton of information on the map yet, as the details will be shown off on Microsoft’s “Inside XBox” digital program next week. All we can tell you is that it’s a multiplayer map called “Suburb.”

It was also announced that all DLC for the title will appear first on XBox 360, but will not necessarily all be exclusive.

You can watch Inside XBox next week, or just check back here after we watch it for you. Homefront will release March 8 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Gamefront News: GTA4 Wheel Friction Mod Produces Insane Video

We love mods here at GameFront. Heck, we’ve got a whole network of sites devoted to them. So, when we saw this video, we couldn’t help but bring it to your attention.

YouTube user dot12321 decided to monkey with wheel friction settings in Grand Theft Auto 4, and see what happened. This video is the result. In his words:

I turned the wheel friction negative in GTA. This is just some of the retarded crap that happened. Due to excessive complaining from viewers, the way you do this is to find your handling.dat file in your GTA4 folder, edit “wbias” to be around -9 for each car.

Gamefront News: Hackers Make a Gameboy Advance Phone

Some people aren’t willing to wait for Sony Ericcson to get around to announcing its Playstation Phone.

Windows Phone Hacker is showing off an old-ass phone they created out of a Gameboy Advance and an HTC Hermes Windows Pocket PC. They also made a video of the thing in action, which you can watch below.

What’s in the video is still just a prototype, but it does actually seem to work, although you can’t use the buttons on the Gameboy housing yet. It includes an animated GIF running at startup that copies that of the Gameboy Advance and uses a PocketGBA emulator that lets it actually play games. In an extra nice touch, it also uses Nintendo music and sound effects for its notifications.

I wonder how many of these Nintendo could sell if they were willing to actually make them.

Gamefront News: Killzone 3 Goes Gold

Killzone 3 has been the subject of much discussion over the past couple of years. Soon, we’ll get a chance to actually play it, and see if it lives up to all the hype. That day just got a little closer, as Sony has announced that the exclusive shooter has gone gold.

In a post on the PlayStation blog this morning, Associate Producer Mike Graham of SCEA Santa Monica details come of the new additions to the third title in the series.

Picking up right where Killzone 2 left off, you return to the role of ISA Sgt. “Sev” Sevchenko. Beaten, bloody but not broken you and your fellow ISA veterans find yourself outnumbered and isolated following the events of Killzone 2. New enemies, new environments and new threats wait for you as the story for survival unfolds.

Add in 3D support including online, split-screen co-op campaign, and full PlayStation Move support including the new sharp shooter peripheral and it’s more to do than you can shake a stick at.

Gamefront News: LA Noire, Obvious Non-truth Make Cover of Playstation: The Official Magazine

Team Bondi is developing LA Noire. Team Bondi is not Rockstar Games. Rockstar Games is publishing LA Noire.

Got that cleared up? Aight, moving on.

LA Noire is all over the cover of Playstation: The Official Magazine this month. They’ve got a WORLD EXCLUSIVE! feature, says the cover. LA Noire is “from the makers of GTA and Red Dead Redempion,” it says.

Wait, what? Who developed LA Noire? Was it Rockstar North, makers of GTA? Rockstar San Diego, makers of Red Dead? No, it was, as we’ve already established, Team Bondi. What LA Noire and GTA and Red Dead all have in common is a publisher, Rockstar Games. A publisher does not “make” games.

Hollywood has a way of doing this kind of thing that doesn’t involve them; they say “from the studio that brought you…” They don’t say Transformers: Dark of the Moon is “from the director of Jurassic Park” because that’s openly misleading and they’d get hammered for saying that.

Gamefront News: Microsoft Prepping Kinect Move to PC, Rumor Says

Rumor has it, Microsoft is working on software development kits to put the Kinect on PC in the next few months, just in time to compete for market share with a few other gesture-control systems headed to shelves.

Microsoft news site WinRumors has the story, which cites unnamed sources and says an SDK and drivers for the Kinect are being prepped for a beta release. This is just a week or so after Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said Kinect would make its way to the PC, but didn’t give a timetable or any details.

The report says third-party developers will be able to use the kit and drivers to create Kinect-enabled PC programs, and that includes games. You can expect that it’ll quickly be able to handle multimedia functionality, too, in order to take on Kinect developer PrimeSense’s PC-enabled multimedia controller.

Gamefront News: Mortal Kombat Trailer To Become a Web Series

Remember that Mortal Kombat: Rebirth trailer that made the rounds on the Internet back in the summer? It’s not going to be a Warner Bros. movie, but it will be a web-only series.

Bloody Disgusting reports that Kevin Tancharoen, who directed the 8-minute, explanation-heavy trailer (which we’ve got below), is slated to do a 10-episode web series based on the concept. Tancharoen (director of Fame and a few other music-related things) is writing the series along with Todd Helbing and Aaron Helbing. There’s no release date yet, but shooting starts in Vancouver in February.

Michael Jai White returns as Jackson ‘Jax’ Briggs, as we saw in the trailer, and Bloody Disgusting says the cast is expected to include MK characters Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Durak, Kabal, Kitana/Mileena and Sub Zero (not Kratos, though). There’s also Scorpion, who seems to be the series’ central character, if the trailer is any indication. And if Tancheroen includes any of that earlier source material, we’ll get Reptile and Baraka as freaky murderers and a brutally murdered Johnny Cage.

Gamefront News: Pac-Man Game Show? Yes, Please.

Who would watch a “reality series” based on Pac-Man?

If the description in this report from Deadline Hollywood is accurate, my thinking is, everyone, everywhere.

The words “reality series” aren’t quite what the vision of the show is, according to the head of Merv Griffin Entertainment, which is partnering up with Namco Bandai for the show. It sounds a whole lot more like a game show:

The Pac-Man reality series is envisioned as a ‘big, crazy Wipeout-type event with a lot of energy,’ said Merv Griffin’s president of TV Roy Bank. ‘The idea we have is to take what Pac-Man is and bring it to life, to bring what is essentially the world’s biggest game of tag to television.’

Yeah. That actually sounds awesome!

Gamefront News: Playstation Phone For Sale in China

I’m starting to wonder why the Sony Ericcson hasn’t announced the Playstation Phone, since it seems the Xperia Play is about three inches from available — and in China, closer than that.

According to RegHardware, Taiwanese site ePrice found and purchased the Playstation Phone in China, where it was apparently on sale. They played with it and at least RegHardware thinks it’s the real deal and not a knock-off made form cobbled-together phone and PSP Go parts.

There’s no carrier service for the phone, so ePrice’s model doesn’t do much, and its Playstation Pocket app doesn’t do anything. We’ve seen the supposed Xperia Play running a few PSX games from the app, but so far what we’ve heard about the phone’s functionality is pretty limited. Otherwise, everything is the same from what we’ve heard so far, including the 4-inch touchscreen and the Android 2.3 operating system.

Gamefront News: Report Says PSP 2 ‘as Powerful as PS3′

Sony is telling the people who will be making PSP 2 games that the still-unannounced handheld is going to be as powerful as a Playstation 3.

That’s according to an MCV report, in which “high-level sources” said that Sony wants to combat the exploding app game market with deeper, more engaging portable content. It wants to differentiate from the iPhone (and the Playstation Phone we keep seeing all over the Internet) and their casual, small-scale games.

The report says a preliminary announcement is scheduled for Jan. 27, with more information coming at GDC and E3 soon after. It’ll incorporate media that can be bought in stores, although downloadable content and apps will still be available on the portable. The PSP 2 could also include some kind of phone capabilities, but if it does, they’ll be minimal.

Gamefront News: Rock Band Network Going Dark on Wii This Week

Rock Band Network, the do-it-yourself authoring service that allows bands to put their own music into Rock Band, has always been available on XBox 360. From time to time, Harmonix will send the most popular songs over to PSN and Wii. Now the developer has announced that Wii version of Rock Band Network will be shut down this week.

In the weekly DLC announcement, Harmonix’s Aaron Trites explains,

With the smaller online install base, limited demand for releases so far and the significant amount of work it takes for our producers and audio team to convert and process these additional tracks, we’re no longer able to continue submitting RBN content to the Wii.

Here’s the list of songs Wii owners can expect to see this week before RBN shuts down on their platform.

* The Main Drag – “How We’d Look On Paper”
* Wounded Soul – “Rx”
* Band of Horses – “The Great Salt Lake”
* Firewind – “Head Up High”
* Cetan Clawson and the Soul Side – “White Heat”
* OK Go – “White Knuckles”

You can check out the announcement yourself on the Rock Band official site.

Gamefront News: ‘Splosion Man vs. MaXplosion: On Imitation, Cloning and Ethics

‘Splosion Man and MaXplosion — two games, one concept. That’s the stance of Twisted Pixel, the guys who created ‘Splosion Man and called out Capcom Mobile over the release of the similar but iPhone-bound MaXplosion.

The two games aren’t just remarkably similar, they’re basically the same. Both are platformers in which the main character has the ability to create explosions. These explosions are used to propel both characters through the air, to bounce off walls, and to trigger explosives for greater lift and speed.

Both carry “par times” for each stage, both have one hidden object to find per level, both are about science experiments escaping the scientists that are experimenting on them. It’s pretty clear that MaXplosion isn’t just inspired by ‘Splosion Man, it’s a replication of the game with a tweaked art style, on a different platform.

Gamefront News: ‘Stronger Than Steel’ Glass Invented; Star Trek, Mass Effect Combined

We’re not the first to make this observation, but we’ll do it any way. Science has brought us one step closer to Star Trek. But in the process have accidentally stumbled sideways into Mass Effect. We’re talking about the fascinating invention of a metallic glass that has demonstrated resilience and damage-toughness ‘beyond that of any known material’. Let that sink in: it’s transparent, and stronger than metal.

Glass stronger and tougher than steel? A new type of damage-tolerant metallic glass, demonstrating a strength and toughness beyond that of any known material, has been developed and tested by a collaboration of researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab)and the California Institute of Technology. What’s more, even better versions of this new glass may be on the way.

“These results mark the first use of a new strategy for metallic glass fabrication and we believe we can use it to make glass that will be even stronger and more tough,” says Robert Ritchie, a materials scientist who led the Berkeley contribution to the research. Yes, we’re describing Transparent aluminum. And that’s awesome, but here’s what caught our eye: The new metallic glass is a microalloy featuring palladium, a metal with a high “bulk-to-shear” stiffness ratio that counteracts the intrinsic brittleness of glassy materials.

“Because of the high bulk-to-shear modulus ratio of palladium-containing material, the energy needed to form shear bands is much lower than the energy required to turn these shear bands into cracks,” Ritchie says. “The result is that glass undergoes extensive plasticity in response to stress, allowing it to bend rather than crack.”

Gamefront News: These are the Top-Selling Games of 2010 (in the USA)

The NPD has spoke, and we now know what the best-selling games of 2010 in North America are. The list will not surprise anyone, likely, but here we are. Naturally, Black Ops is the winner. Digest this:

1. Call of Duty: Black Ops (Activision)
2. Madden NFL ’11 (EA)
3. Halo: Reach (Microsoft)
4. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Nintendo)
5. Red Dead Redemption (Take-Two)
6. Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo)
7. Just Dance 2 (Ubisoft)
8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision)
9. Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood (Ubisoft)
10. NBA 2K11 (Take-Two)

Considering how well it sold out of the gate, it is slightly surprising to see Modern Warfare 2 here, but only ever so. It is intriguing to see New Super Mario Bros. so high on the list while Super Mario Galaxy 2 is nowhere to be found, though. I guess the lesson here is that if you’re going to return to the well for the hundredth time, you might as well go all the way down the damn thing for maximum mindless nostalgic effect. Not to hate on New Super Mario Bros. too much, but come on, y’all. Seriously. People are so boring.

Last note: While Just Dance 2 was the second best-selling game in the last two months of the year, it only managed to come in at no. 7. This disappoints me, because if my mom buys a game because she wants to play it, I assumed it would have to be because the game in question is the most popular in history because she’s never done that before. No, really, Just Dance 2 is the only game she’s ever bought for herself, and all the other games she has are those I bought for her. Strange world we live in.

Gamefront News: Unlock Bulletstorm Content in its Demo, Downloadable on Jan. 25

The rumors are true! Xbox Live and the Playstation Network will see a downloadable Bulletstorm demo on Jan. 25, but European players have to wait a day longer to check out the game. Even better, demo players can (potentially) unlock content that’ll work in the game’s multiplayer mode when it’s eventually released on Feb. 22.

According to a press release from Epic Games and Electronic Arts, the demo will feature Bulletstorm’s “Echo” mode, which sounds like an arcade-style mode in which you earn points for creatively killing bad guys in campaign levels. From the release:

The Bulletstorm demo introduces a slice of Echo mode in which players traverse a collapsed building on the deadly paradise planet Stygia as ex-Dead Echo leader Grayson Hunt. Players will utilize the “Skillshot” system in Bulletstorm as they crush enemies in increasingly creative ways to rack up points using an arsenal of powerful weapons, from a futuristic assault rifle called the Peace Maker Carbine, to the Flail Gun, which fires two grenades linked by a chain, and the Screamer, a powerful revolver that turns enemies into human fireworks.

Gamefront News: Video Game Sales Were Down by $1 billion (or so) in the US in 2010

The NPD says total revenue from the sale of physical video games and video game hardware and digital content and rentals (the latter two are basically guesses) in the US was down 5% in 2010 from 2009. That means, deep breath, the gaming industry only raked in $19.3 billion from American consumers. Bejeezuz, man. That’s just so sad. Like, Bobby Kotick might only be able to by four or five new mansions this year because of that. Sad day.

Meanwhile, the top consoles for the year were, in this order: Nintendo DS with 8 million sold, the Wii with 7 million sold, the Xbox 360 with 6.7 million and the PS3 with some unknown number we won’t learn at least until Sony releases their quarterly earnings report. Remember that these are US numbers.

One last note. Yesterday, I thought it mildly strange that a game, Just Dance 2, that came in second in sales to Black Ops during the ridiculous holiday shopping season would only be seventh in total sales for the year. One fact I did not notice then in the NPD report is that Black Ops, for the year, sold twice as many copies as Madden NFL 11, which was no. 2 for the year. So the gap between Black Ops and Just Dance 2 during the holiday season must have been quite large.

Bridge Commander: Star Trek: Lexington: "All In the Appearances" **Premier**
Being a HUGE fan of independent trek fan film works. I've secured permission from Star Trek: Lexington's Executive Producer Joseph Bonice, to have Bridge Commander Files as a mirror host site for the independent fan production. The premiere episode called "All in the Appearances" that was released on January 01, 2011.

In this episode, set in cr. 2386 the Excelsior Class U.S.S. Arizona and the Spruance Class U.S.S. Fletcher are attacked by an unknown assailant. The enemy ship fires while cloaked. It appears the Romulans have over come the limitations of the cloaking device. The U.S.S. Lexington is called from shore leave to investigate. The Romulans are on the move Again!

The episodes from ST: Lexington will be added to the Bridge Commander Files archives. Starting with the teaser and first act. For those of us, who can't live off of reruns alone. And need a fresh Trek fix? The fan productions will do that for you. I'm continually astonished at the dedication and imagination that the Trek fan productions have put forth. I hope you will all join me in supporting all the Trek Fan based productions here at Bridge Commander Files. Especially, something made by members of the BC Community!

Star Trek: Lexington's cast promotional pics and ships used in the production have been added below. This is the original cast. Since then, there have been cast changes. The Lexington producers had a PC accident, loosing vital scenes. Which caused them to postpone their 2009 release. They have been able to salvage and edit the material.

The Star Trek: Lexington has moved to a new domain, the link above this article will take you there for further information. Both the teaser and the first act of Star trek: Lexington will be uploaded to the site shortly. The videos will be available in .avi / mpeg4 format.

I would like to personally thank Star Trek: Lexington's Producers for letting Bridge Commander Files host their extension into the "Vision of Trek".

Lord of the Rings Online: Lord of the Rings Online MMO Of the Year
Lord of the Rings Online has won PC Gamers MMO of the Year award, citing good and frequent updates as one of its main reasons for LotrO getting that top spot.

Quote:
A lot of MMOs thrived this year, but their success was dampened by a lack of major updates or innovation. When it came to keeping us entertained all year long with small updates, plus throwing us the occasional party with huge loads of free content, LotRO treated its fans the best. Two new Epic Books’ worth of quests alongside the franchise’s memorable characters and two new regions were added; character creation and starter regions were completely revamped, in-game events were expanded and UI elements were improved—and then the game went free-to-play in September.

PC Gamer certainly has high hopes for Lord of the Rings Online and I would be astonished if it said anything different, the rate of updates and quality of them are of such a high level I would be surprised if LotrO didn't grab this award next year too, especially with the release of the Rise of Isengard update coming later this year.

Stalker: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 to focus more on Survival. PC Version won't suffer Consolitis.
For those of us that are worried that the Multi-Platform release of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 would included a neutered PC version need not worry. The fact the game is also coming to consoles won't affect the PC version, so say GSC.

Quote:
The STALKER 2 development team have been answering questions from fans on Facebook, revealing a few early details about the sequel. The game is being built in a new engine for console and PC release, but GSC make assurances that the game is still being developed primarily for the PC, and will contain Direct X 11 support. STALKER 2 will also have more of a survival element, and will contain new mutants to run away from. Read on for details.

GSC said that “since we develop primarily on PC, you won’t see any compromises in the PC version. The key difference between the PC and console versions will be the beauty of graphics (meaning PC will offer more of visual effects).” The team also promises that the game’s inventory and maps, common failing points for console ports, would not be affected. STALKER 2’s new engine will also have DirectX 11 support.

GSC also say that the game will have more of a survival element, which is pretty terrifying considering the punishing environments of the first three games. The game will take place “in the triangle of CNPP, the cities of Chernobyl and Chernobyl 2″, and contains more of the haunted X Labs and underground bunkers that represented some of the scariest areas from the original games.

The new areas will contain new mutants and weapons, though the faction system will not be making a return. The radioactive artefacts that could be used to buff your characters abilities while simultaneously irradiating him to within an inch of his life will be coming back, though the application and effects of artefacts are likely to be different.
