Here it is the 28th version of the Weekly Gamefront Network News Update, the news part of the update covers the news side of the Network and the Gamefront Main site over the past week. There has been a fair bit of news from the Main site including a lot of trailers, reviews, previews and a lot more - some of this has been included below including lots of trailers and videos.. Unfortunately there won't be another files update for the moment due to the on going issues with the images, which I hope will be fixed some time soon! I apologise for the lack of news updates recently, I've had a few personal issues recently although this one covers three weeks of network news and about a week of news from the Gamefront Site including some pre-E3 news including more news on Ninendos "Project Cafe" and more.

Also of course there is the news from the Network Sites not as much as the main site but still just as important! Lots more news can be found from Gamefront News - Here

Gamefront News: 3DS Gets Web Browser, eShop on Monday

The Nintendo 3DS will finally become a fully featured current generation platform Monday night when a major system update goes live enabling the system’s internet browser and eShop, where folks will be able to finally be able to do something with the system’s hard drive aside from saving grainy, low-res 3D images. And to “celebrate” this momentous occasion for the 3DS, everyone with a 3DS will be able to download a new 3D version of Excitebike for freezy.

The update will also include a 3D Pokedex. No, I’m serious. Folks get data for the -dex by playing Pokemons Black and White or via SpotPass.

No word whatsoever in the announcement of the Netflix streaming capability that had been expected to come with this update. It does, however, mention that “in the near future” another update will allow users to download various 3D video clips and movie trailers..

Gamefront News: Activision’s Call of Duty: Elite FAQ – Some Questions Answered

After the announcement of Call of Duty: Elite last week, a number of questions about the service went unanswered. In fact, we still don’t have many of the answers — and we’ve actually seen the thing in action.

But to help, Activision has just released a list of Frequently Asked Questions and a bunch of answers about the service. As one might expect, it leaves a few things up in the air and it spends a lot of words talking about just how great Elite will be and why you should pay for it, but there is some useful information in there. Gamefront News: Aliens: Colonial Marines Gets an E3 Trailer

To go along with the news that it’s being released in 2012, Aliens: Colonial Marines now has an E3 trailer as well.

Gamefront News: Audi A1 Clubsport Built in Reality, Drivable in Need for Speed World (TRAILER)

The Audi A1 Clubsport Quattro. It’s a real car, and you can see it being built in the trailer below.

And you can also drive it in Need for Speed: World Online.

Scroll on down to watch the trailer. The team building the car starts with a (kind of crap-looking) Audi A1 and spiff it up in a whole lot of ways. By the end, they have a bad-ass racer that has been digitized and is available for schooling fools on the highways of the Internet.

Gamefront News: Back to the Future Ep 5 Coming June 23 with Michael J. Fox

Telltale Games has confirmed that the last episode of its five-part point-and-click adventure game, Back to the Future, will drop for PC and Mac on June 23 — and that a character in the finale will be voiced by Michael J. Fox.

That’s him in the image above, and you should definitely watch this behind-the-scenes video from The Telltale Blog talking about Episode 5, OUTATIME, as well.

There’s not a lot of information about exactly who Fox plays in the story, although you can see him in the video below (which contains a few story spoilers, I should say, so be careful). The Telltale Blog post says he’s a character Marty met during the course of the original films, and it appears that he’s present in the game’s past setting, so he’s an ancestor of some kind. Despite being a pretty huge BttF fan, I’m struggling to figure out just who it might be. If you’ve got suggestions, hit the comments with ‘em.

Gamefront News: Black Ops Escalation Happens on on PS3 Next Week

The Escalation waiting game is about to end for PS3 users, as the latest Call of Duty: Black Ops map pack, which also features the famous people-filled Call of the Dead, will finally make its way to that platform on June 10, aka a week from right now. It’s $15, which you’ll pay eagerly and love it, because you don’t wanna be uncool, right? Right.

Gamefront News: Button Mashup #2: Cole Phelps is a Horrible Detective (Video)

Detective Cole Phelps sure is pensive. Whether it’s refusing to talk about the war, angrily refusing to talk about the war, or scolding his partners for even minor transgressions like enjoying a quick nip on the job, he really is the biggest wet blanket in the entire LAPD. Now we know why: Cole Phelps just isn’t very good at his job, and he knows it.

Here’s a mashup our crack video team put together featuring all the worst best moments of Det. Phelps’ hilarious failures at the whole being-a-detective-thing. Is it any wonder his partners give him so much guff?

Gamefront News: C&C Generals: Zero Hour Mod — Cold War Crisis

Cold War Crisis is a realistic Command & Conquer Generals: Zero Hour total conversion set in the 1980s. It’s Russia versus the USA, and time-appropriate weapons and units are included. The Russians tend to use tanks and artillery (for example: T-72 / T-80, BM-21, 2S1) while the Americans rely on aircraft and high-tech units (for example: F-15, F-16, F-117, A-10).

The infantry in this total conversion — of which there are many — are not just cannon fodder. That being said, engaging a T-80UK with a US Rifleman still won’t be a good idea. However, other infantry units, such as LAW/RPG-Soldiers, are better suited to taking out armored units.

Gamefront News: Call of Duty: Elite Hands-On Preview

There are more than 20 million players who take to the battlefield in Call of Duty: Black Ops. That’s a huge number, and with a multiplayer community that massive, there’s also a massive amount of data associated with it.

In fact, there’s so much data out there that Activision has created a new way to track it all — it’s called Call of Duty: Elite, and it’s that thing developed by the newly created Activision studio, Project Beachhead. You might remember that story from a few months back, when Activision’s head of publishing, Michael Griffith, said this: “Beachhead will create the best-in-class online community, exclusive content, and a suite of services to supercharge the online gaming experience like never before. The platform will support in-game integration and bring online experiences and console play together for the first time.”

In a nutshell, that’s what Call of Duty: Elite is — a massive stat-tracking social networking platform that’s going to be fully integrated into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and will track players’ stats across their entire Call of Duty careers going forward. The platform will support Call of Duty: Black Ops when it all launches in November, but the real star of the show will be Modern Warfare 3. By way of comparison, think Halo: Waypoint or Rockstar’s Social Club online sites.

Gamefront News: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Perks, Killstreaks, Weapons and Unlocks Partially Revealed

UPDATE: Infinity Ward Creative Strategist Robert Bowling has said that this information is inaccurate in a pair of tweets. (here and here) So, it’s apparently back to the drawing board.

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 information continues to leak out. First, there was a dump of info that revealed the setting and story. Now, we’re getting a first look at multiplayer perks, killstreaks, weapons and unlocks.

Thanks to Kotaku, we’ve now got info on a number of the multiplayer goodies. It’s obviously a very limited list, and much will be added to it as we get closer to release, but this is at least a good start.

Unfortunately, they also report that like Modern Warfare 2, MW3 will not support dedicated servers. Instead, it will leave players at the mercy of hosted servers once again. This is a major letdown, as dedicated servers are a large part of making a game’s multiplayer experience better.

At any rate, here are the goodies that have been revealed so far.

Gamefront News: Call of Duty 2 — Tally’s MP Bot Mod

This Call of Duty 2 mod allows server admins to spawn up to 10 bots on their servers. These AI-controlled players are, unfortunately, little more than mindless zombies, but they can be useful to modders looking to test features in mods they’re working on.

Or, if you’re just looking to blow off some steam, these bots make for good target practice.

Apart from spawning bots, you can also change which weapons the bots spawn with. Tally’s MP Bot Mod works with all gametypes.

Be sure to properly read the instructions before deciding this mod doesn’t work.

Gamefront News: Crysis Map — Physis III

No, there’s no “c” missing. That’s the name of this third map in the Physis series.

This map for Crysis features three islands that offer a variety of physics “attractions.” The first island focuses on objects and buildings, the second gears itself toward Rube Goldberg machines, while the third is all about rag-dolls.

No story, no artistry in the visual design — this map is all about showcasing the engine’s physics capabilities. In hilarious ways.

Gamefront News: Dark Souls E3 Story Trailer

So who’s pumped about the story in Dark Souls? Yeah, I didn’t think so, but that it has a story and not just a presumably punishing yet addictive campaign is a bonus. Here we have a pretty generic-sounding fantasy tale, but the real attraction to this trailer is the visuals; it looks friggin’ gorgeous. To my eyes and bad memory, it looks like Demon’s Souls but prettier, which will lessen the sting of being constantly chopped to s–t.

Gamefront News: DICE to Show Battlefield 3 Multiplayer at E3

With E3 starting Tuesday, companies are starting to reveal a bit of what they’ll be showing off. DICE is no exception, lifting their tent a bit to tell us just what Battlefield 3 goodies we can expect.

First off, we’ll get to finally see some multiplayer. Karl Magnus Troedsson, DICE General Manager, made the announcement in a statement posted on the Battlefield Blog, saying,

Powered by the Frostbite 2 engine, Battlefield 3 features some of the biggest and most spectacular maps that we have built. At the same time, we are also able to create more intense close-quarter combat than ever before. The multiplayer map, “Operation Métro,” available for press to play on the show floor, combines both sides of the scale into one cohesive experience.

Our guys will be there getting their hands dirty playing the game, and they’ll bring you all the info right from the show floor. What they won’t be seeing is detailed in the DICE post as well. Says Troedsson,

Of course there are things we will not be showing at E3, including the game’s extensive co-op campaign, the introduction of Team Death Match mode and the Battlefield 3 Battlelog web destination – featuring powerful social tools, feeds and detailed player stats. Battlelog also lets you manage your friends lists, squad up, create platoons, use voice chat and follow your friends’ progress in real-time, and more. Battlelog will be available for the monthly fee of (drum roll)… zero dollars. We look forward to providing more information on these features in the near future!

Gamefront News: Duke Nukem Forever Launch Trailer

The evidence that Duke Nukem Forever is, in fact, actually going to be released in just ten days is starting to mount. There’s the demo that went live last night for those who pre-ordered, and now there’s a launch trailer, which is usually the final signifier of a game’s existence. I’ve seen a game cancelled after a demo was released, but have I ever seen a game even be delayed after the launch trailer hit? I don’t think so.

So take this trailer and enjoy it all you want without the worry that usually comes with a new DNF trailer. This is the last DNF trailer ever. Unbelievable.

PES is the only 3DS game I play much, and so I’ve somehow forgotten about FIFA. Jeez, I wish there were a FIFA game on 3DS. Oh well, I can wait, just like I can wait for the real HD thing. Gamefront News: Frogger 3D Announcement Trailer (Video)
I’m not the biggest fan of the original Frogger. That’s partially because it’s like sacrificing quarters to the arcade gods, and partly because WHY CAN’T THIS DAMN FROG SWIM? He’s an amphibian for crying out loud. But this update of the OG Frogger for 3DS looks pretty fun. It also has giant frog mech suits Frogger can jump into for added destruction. Plus, rats can eat your corpse.

I… suppose I’ll make an effort to check it out at E3 and see how it is. Enjoy.

To hash them all out, we gathered together the GameFront staff — Ron Whitaker, Phil Hornshaw, Phil Owen, Ben Richardson and Ross Lincoln — to discuss the game’s setting, story, gameplay and impact. Though we didn’t reach a consensus on the game itself, we managed to get to the heart, we think, of why this game works, why it doesn’t, and what it means for the future of gaming.

Gamefront News: Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford: Reviewers Who Don’t Like Duke Nukem Forever Will Be “Held Accountable”

After more than a decade of delays, the release of the much-ballyhooed Duke Nukem Forever is only a week away. With the weight of huge expectations lying heavy on Duke’s abundantly muscled shoulders, it’s no surprise that his masters at Gearbox Software are going to any lengths — and stooping to any lows — to ensure the game’s success.

There was the press event at the strip club, which only presaged other cynical, exploitative P.R. stunts: carefully choreographed leaks that showcased all the game’s corny, sexist touches, like the tag-team blow job, the glory hole, and the capture-the-flag mode in which the flag is a woman — if she dares to complain about being treated like an object, players can smack her on the ass to shut the bitch up.

Not content to blow the dog-whistle of misogyny while cowering behind the fig leaf of purported parody, Gearbox C.E.O. Randy Pitchford recently ascended his bully pulpit to indulge in another industry standby: intimidating reviewers with cheap scare tactics. Affecting a tone that was part Baghdad Bob, part Tony Soprano, Pitchford unburdened himself to to Eurogamer:

Gamefront News: Giant Eagle Saves the Day Repeatedly in Lord of the Rings: War in the North (TRAILER)

I like The Lord of the Rings as much as the next guy, but there’s something a bit weird about this trailer. Like, do you get to control that giant eagle that seems to be winning every battle and defeating every enemy? He’s kinda hogging up all the spotlight in the latest Lord of the Rings: War in the North trailer.

Scroll on down and watch the trailer for yourself. That eagle kicks ass. He bogarts the whole trailer. In fact, I’m kind of hoping the next Lord of the Rings is all about just killing things as a giant eagle. That seems really, really satisfying.

Gamefront News: GTA San Andreas…With Terminators! (Video)

Good god this is hilarious. This is footage from a brilliantly modded copy of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Now I know the thing we’re supposed to love the most is that the Russians have been replaced by Terminators – appropriate since this scene is totally inspired by Terminator 2 – but the single best thing is how they turned Big Smoke into a motorcycle.

Gamefront News: Hunted: The Demon’s Forge Gold

The appeal of Gold should be pretty obvious to anyone, especially anyone who’s ever played an RPG. Midas’ ruin takes on an extra significance in Hunted, however, since it can be used to purchase new abilities and ephemera in the game’s Crucible level-building mode. Gold is distributed during the single-player campaign in the form of lucrative caches, so use this guide to get yourself rich!

Gamefront News: Huge New Details About Project Cafe For E3 2011

As relayed by Gamespot, the Nikkei news service has reported on some extremely interesting details about Nintendo’s upcoming new console, currently code-named ‘Project Cafe’. The controller will include a touch screen interface (6 inch screen!) on the center, allowing the ability to play games as one would on iPhone/Android or tablet. But it gets better. The new controller can also be used as a “portable game device”, which means presumably it can function independent of the console itself.

Reports are also emerging that the console will include a camera allowing players to “to create characters based on pictures they snap.” Of course, the 3DS already does this, allowing players to create 3D Miis using the 3D camera. What this means is unclear. Is this a signal from Nintendo that the controller will be compatible with DS games? Will the touch screen support 3D? Or will it be available only for games specific to the new console. We’ll obviously be doing everything we can to answer these questions next week during E3 2011.

In the meantime, if this sounds familiar, it’s because Sega already tried something similar in 1999 with the Dreamcast console. That controller also featured an interactive screen (not touch), and could function independently as a portable gaming system.

Gamefront News: Ico HD and Shadow of the Colossus HD Dated For Japan

Sony has announced that the long-expected HD versions of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus will street on September 22 and retail for 3,980 yen each. I say “each” because they’re separate releases. While in the West we’ll be getting the two remastered titles in a bundle (I know this because I’ve seen the box art) costing about that price total in our currencies, our friends in the East will have to buy each separately or in an expensive special edition bundle that’ll run you 6,980 yen. Of y’all can just import this baby.

Gamefront News: I’m Definitely Going To Have to Get This Uncharted 3 Collector’s Edition

I’ve never bought a collector’s edition of game before, and I’ve never even really been tempted to. As glamorous as this job is, it doesn’t pay well enough for me to feel comfortable paying more for games than I have to. And usually when I’m pumped enough about a game that I might consider it, I usually get a review copy, tendering the whole point moot.

That’s probably what’s going to happen with Uncharted 3, but until the review copy hits my mailbox I’m going to be wrestling with the idea of spending he extra dough on this collector’s edition, which includes that neat-looking box, a steel case for the game, a Nate Drake figuring and wearable replicas of the ring Nate wears around his neck and the belt buckle he keeps above his junk.

Hell, even with the review copy I might buy this. It depends on the price, which Sony has not announced yet.

Gamefront News: Konami Teases New Contra Title

At Konami’s pre-E3 briefing, they showed a short teaser that ended with a fiery Contra logo and the slogan “They’re coming” beneath it, hinting that a new Contra game is coming. That was it, though — maybe we’ll find out more at E3 proper next week, but you never know.

Gamefront News: Metal Gear Solid HD Collection Coming in November

Konami has announced at their pre-E3 press briefing that they’ll be releasing an HD blu-ray collection of all its non-PS3 main story Metal Gear games [aside from the first]. That’s Metal Gear Solids 2 and 3 and Peace Walker, which makes for the beefiest HD collection for the Playstation 3 that anyone has put together thus far in terms of the amount of time it will take you to trudge through everything. The collection will be out in November.

In a case of “move along — nothing to see here” type of news, Hideo Kojima appeared at Konami’s pre-E3 briefing say that there will be no Metal Gear Solid: Rising at E3 this year, and that they’re still hoping to get the game out in 2012. I guess it would probably be more shocking if something had changed; it’s not like they’re actually gonna move it up, so a change would mean a delay to 2013.

Gamefront News: Metro: Last Light Gameplay Trailer

I thought the last Metro: Last Light teaser trailer was really cool, but it ain’t got nothin’ on this new teaser, which has a lot more actual game footage than that one did. It’s also got that same Portishead song, which is great. I think this one is my trailer of the year so far — it’s seriously just so wonderful, and I can’t stop myself from watching it over and over again. But enough of my talkin’.

Gamefront News: OnLive Heading to the UK This Fall

I really like OnLive — the microconsole works wonderfully with my U-Verse internet connection, and I own like six games on the system. I’m saying the news that OnLive will finally reach across the pond to the United Kingdom is good for you folks who live over there, or at least for those of you with s–t computers, like me.

No dates or anything yet, but they’re saying it’ll be ready to go this fall, and they’ll start letting folks over there sign up Tuesday. They say signing up early will get you early access; they did the same kinda thing before they launched the service here in the US last summer. If you like countdown clocks, they’ve got your fix with a clock counting down to when you’ll be able to sign up here.

Gamefront News: Paramount Announces Co-op Star Trek Game For 2012

As if a Star Wars MMO isn’t enough to get your sci-fi juices flowing at E3 next week, Paramount Digital Entertainment has just announced that they will be debuting a co-op action game set in the Star Trek universe at E3 next week.

Set in the universe of the recent J.J. Abrams film, the game will cast players as Kirk and Spock trying to “stop a legendary enemy race” (anyone want to bet it’s the Borg?) from taking over the galaxy. This isn’t based on any movie or TV episode. Instead, it will sport an original story penned by God of War writer Marianne Krawczyk, in collaboration with the writers of the new Star Trek films, Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman.

Digital Extremes, who is also working on The Darkness 2, is handling the development duties. Star Trek is slated to hit PC, PS3, and XBox 360 in summer 2012. The game will be shown at E3 next week, so we’ll have more info for you from the show floor.

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m kind of excited about this one. It’s been a while since we had a decent game set in the Star Trek Universe, and if Digital Extremes can put together a solid title, it could be one of next year’s summer blockbusters.

Gamefront News: Prey 2 E3 Traler

This Prey 2 trailer is cool, but I’m not sure why it’s a Prey game. Seems like somebody was making a new IP and then a marketing person decided to slap the Prey name on it. Whatever, Far Cry 2 is one of my favorite games this generation, and that was in the same boat. Things like this are just a natural side effect of the sequel-happy world we live in.

But yeah, this trailer is pretty cool. It looks like Blade Runner with aliens, and that sounds like a winning combination to me, whatever the title of the game.

Gamefront News: Red Faction: Armageddon Review

It’s hard to figure how just destroying everything in a given room might become a strategy in a shooter. Red Faction: Armageddon finds a way, though — it turns just about everything in a room into a weapon to use against enemies. Each man-made structure is potentially a bludgeon or an explosive; each slab of concrete or steel a massive fly swatter for squashing your adversaries.

Four games into its mechanic of creating highly destructible environments for players to blast their way through, developer Volition’s latest Red Faction title still manages to provide lots of satisfying explosions and collapses, and succeeds in making them useful to its shooter gameplay. The whole package isn’t quite 100 percent, but it does invite players to approach battles in ways that are new and fresh in an overcrowded genre. In Red Faction: Armageddon, if you’re just pulling a bunch of headshots, you’re doing it wrong.

Gamefront News: Report: New Rainbow Six On the Way

A Kotaku source is saying that a new Rainbow Six game is in the works, and that it’ll be more like the class PC editions of the franchise than the new school Vegas iterations. That means, hopefully, that each mission will require careful planning and precision, and that I’ll be able to edit the game files and rename all the characters after my friends so it will mean more when they get killed.

The birdie says the game will be about a terrorist group targeting New York, and that it will retain the third-person cover system from the Vegas titles. No wod on if the game will be revealed at E3, so don’t get your hopes up. But do get your hopes up.

Gamefront News: RIFT’s Scott Hartsman Talks Transfers, Events, and the Future (INTERVIEW)

Late last week, we got a chance to sit down for a chat with Scott Hartsman, the Executive Producer of RIFT. Interviewing Scott is a very interesting time, as he is demonstrably passionate about what he does. There’s no question that he’s excited about RIFT and where it’s going. As Trion Worlds gears up for E3, we stole a few minutes to ask some questions about exactly where RIFT is going, as well as to chat about where it’s been, and what they’ve learned so far.

GameFront: Let’s start out by talking about The River of Souls event. You had a pretty good event that didn’t end as well as you’d hoped. What sort of response did you get from your players?

Scott Hartsman: One of the things I think we’re becoming at least a little bit known for is our willingness to try crazy stuff, even when it flies in the face of what everybody knows to be true. When we first came up with the idea of invasions and zone takeovers and this world where people can literally lose access to quest content because it’s a living world that’s under attack, the amount of naysaying, even internally, was pretty large, with comments like “Oh my god, that’s a terrible idea, blah, blah blah.” It was a brave experiment, and we tried it. Lo and behold, hey, it was actually really fun and working. We kept it, and it became a signature part of the game.

I think of our events the same way. Our first take was “We’re going to try a big crazy thing and see if it works. We’re gonna have some parts that do work and some parts that don’t work.” I think as long as we learn important lessons and adapt for the future, at least in our experience, our users seem to be pretty happy when we’re up front about stuff like that.

It was a big, explosive thing to try. It was two or three weeks of lead-up events, which were the dailies and the rifts and the zone events, which were fun and great, and everyone enjoyed them. Towards the end, WOW did it get bumpy on a few servers. It turns out that putting an entire server population into the same zone is no problem, but when you put them all on the same 10 foot by 10 foot area of ground, hey, problem.

Gamefront News: RIFT’s Server Transfers Are Instantaneous, Says Hartsman

Late last week, I had the distinct pleasure of chatting with RIFT’s Executive Producer, Scott Hartsman. One of the topics that obviously came up was the recently announced server transfers that are coming to Trion Worlds’ MMO.

Unlike many other games, these transfers will be free. They’ll also put the players in control of the transfer process. When I ran down the list of features as we understood them (free transfers, available once a week, and initiated in-game), Scott had this to say.

Yes, I walked through it with a programmer yesterday. It’s the coolest thing I have ever seen. OK, one of the coolest things I have ever seen.

Things got even more interesting when I asked how long the transfer would take to be completed. Hartsman replied,

Yes, it’s instantaneous. Takes about a second. Like I said, it’s really slick. I say this to everybody who will sit through the sentence: Our engineers impress me to absolutely no end. No two ways about it…You’re sitting at character select, you click transfer, and the list pops up. Select your destination, and it’s done.

Gamefront News: Rumor: Expect a Devil May Cry HD Collection Announcement at E3

A “source” tells Gematsu that a blu-ray Devil May Cry HD collection — presumably including the first three games in the series — is in the works and that it will be announced at E3. If true, I approve, even though I’m not a Devil May Cry fan. Anything that improves the tail on video games is a good one in my book. And it makes sense that this would happen; it’s not unlike Eidos pushing out a Tomb Raider collection before a reboot, what with the DMC reboot on the way. Also, October is the series’ 10th anniversary.

If and when an announcement is actually made, you’ll find out about it here. You better believe we aren’t gonna be doing much else than repeating everything we hear out of E3 next week, because it’s gonna be, as always, the biggest news week of the year. Should be fun.

Gamefront News: Rumor: MS Unveiling Xbox 360 IPTV Service at E3

I’m probably going to cancel my TV after the NBA Finals end in a week or two, just because I’m paying way too much to watch the five channels I watch. Oh look, Microsoft might be trying to start up a TV service over Xbox Live! (via WinRumors)

As the rumor goes, the service will be called Xbox Live Diamond, and MS is rushing to get agreements in place for the be unveiling at their presser this week. the service would be a “virtual cable operator,” and so presumably you’d get most of the s–t you already get on cable or satellite.

I like the idea a lot, because there are a lot of advantages to IPTV, which I’ve been using for six months in the form of U-Verse. The biggest advantage, to me, is that changes can be made to the service instantly; I can order HBO, and bam there’s HBO, and then I can cancel HBO, the poof it’s gone. And, of course, the service provider can make changes to the lineup at will. Back during the Masters, U-Verse moved NBC to right next to ESPN in my channel lineup and added five special Masters channels, and so I had the most thorough and convenient Masters coverage possible.

Gamefront News: Silent Hill Gets HD Collection and NGP Title

Konami announced at their pre-E3 event another blu-ray collection of PS2 titles: the Silent Hill Collection. The pack will include HD versions of Silent Hill 2 and 3.

Also, they’ve announced that they’re planning an NGP title for the franchise, called Silent Hill: Book of Memories. Maybe it’s a clip show?

Gamefront News: Sony Lifts NGP Embargo, Previews Abound

Sony’s E3 press conference is just over 96 hours away, and they’ve lifted the embargo from their recent NGP press event. As a result, previews, screens and hardware info are pouring out onto the internet.

First off, let’s talk games. Event attendees got their hands on nine titles. Here’s the list:

It looks like that rumor wasn’t all that far off. If the is the whole lineup, it will be a little sparse, but much harder hitting than the one Nintendo provided with the 3DS, which lacked any first-party titles of substance. We’ve got a bunch of game screenshots below.

The reports on the hardware center around the 5″ touch screen, smaller-than-expected face buttons, and two analog sticks. Also of interest is the real touch screen, which lets you perform a variety of actions depending on the title, but has no effect if you’re playing a game that doesn’t support it.

Gamefront News: Sony Thought About Making the NGP into a Phone, Too

What we decided was, yes, we want 3G but having voice will limit us in terms of designing the gaming experience. For example the 5-inch OLED screen – you wouldn’t have a 5-inch screen on a smart- or cell- phone, it wouldn’t fit in your pocket.

I didn’t really think of it like that, Shuhei Yoshida, SCE Worldwide president (speaking with Edge), but yes that’s a good point. Another good point: having voice would probably jack up the sell price significantly from what most people would be willing to pay for a handheld gaming device. High-end phones retail for up to $500 without a service contract, and since an NGP Phone/Vitaphone would probably be locked in with a single carrier, most folks would have to buy it without a contract just because all they want to do with it is play the f–king games, you assholes.

Gamefront News: The Witcher 2 – XBox 360 Teaser Trailer

Yeah, I just shouted word up like a dork. That’s how happy I am about the impending Xbox 360 release of The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings. GameFront’s review of the PC version was glowing, but because my PC is gradually succumbing to dementia I couldn’t play it. Now? I’ll get to enjoy the stuttering, laggy goodness that has come to define the modern Xbox 360 play experience.

But seriously, inevitable tech issues aside, I can’t wait to play this and you can bet cash money I’ll be getting my hands on a test drive during E3.

Gamefront News: THQ Announces Darksiders II (TRAILER)

I’m not much of a fan of Darksiders, but I feel that way about it because War is an annoying character and the game isn’t very much fun to play — both of which are fixable in a sequel. My first complaint has seemingly been addressed; Darksiders II is about Death instead of War. It remains to be see if this game will fun, but I have faith in yous guyses thanks to this really cool trailer. That’s what I call a marketing victory.

Gamefront News: Your First “Look” at the New Tomb Raider (TRAILER)

This new Tomb Raider debut trailer, being cinematic and free of any game footage, is all about setting the tone and showing of what kind of adventure this new Lara Croft origin tale is gonna be. And boy is it effective; I’m ready to fire it up right now. Assuming this trailer is actually representative of the mood of the final game, I’m cautiously optimistic about it.

Battlefield 1942: BF1918 Final Release 3.1

After possibly record-breaking three years of development we brought the last works on the new version of Battlefield 1918 to an end. Lots of new stuff (some never shown before) shall compensate for your endurance during the long wait.

The contents of our major release 3.1 are 65 new handweapons, vehicles as well as planes and ships. In addition to that we have 35 new maps and five maps which were completely redone as well as singleplayer support for 30 maps. Last but not least Belgium and Canada as new nations.

Besides that we listened to our community and brought old maps which weren't included in version 3.0 back. At this point we want to thank everyone who participated in the making and betatesting of major release 3.1 (the whole dev-team as also our external supporters like Battlegroup 42, Eve of Destruction, Dnamro of battlefieldsingleplayer.com or CamelNele). Without your patient and dedicated assistance this version wouldn't be possible. With a very small team with a partial changing lineup we worked one by one on this probably last version of Battlefield 1918 which we want to show you today. Depending on the feedback we reserve the making of a mappack with new content and in addition the third Forgotten Honor campaign for BF1918 is being prepared at the moment.

So we will stay with you for a while. We wish you lots of fun with this release of Battlefield 1918, hoping you'll enjoy it and finally here is the download link to our major release 3.1:

Call of Duty 2: Back2Fronts Mod News Update
A pretty big update from MCh2207Cz last week on Mod DB for the Back2Fronts mod and I thought I'd share with everyone on CoDFiles the really hard work that's going in to the mod. Just a quick note that the mod is due for a pre-alpha test soon (mid 2011) so we're all looking forward to that (if it's going closed or open test).

Hi all!

At last I have finished off the Mosin-Nagant 3D models. I can proudly present a true Russian M1891/30 variant which was the most frequent and used of all Mosin-Nagants on the Eastern front. I did it because the original CoD2 Mosin-Nagant model was completely wrong, it was a hybrid between Finish (M28/30) and Russian (M1938) variants.
I made three M1891/30 models in total: an unscoped version, a sniper version with cloth cover and a sniper version without cloth cover. Both snipers have PU scope with x3,5 magnification.

Call of Duty 4: Heroes 7 Mod Update
Heroes 7 has a mod update but I've noticed that it has not been featured on this site before, so for those of you that do not know about Heroes 7 mod made by sam_fisher3000, here's a description of what the mod is about:

A fictional leader, Al-kab-dir, wants war on the friendly nations, the US, Britain and Russia. The friendly nations, have declared war on Iraq first.

A special forces group is called in to scout the city to advance the attack so the armies can have tactics on how to control the city and kill Al-kab-dir.

The special forces group belongs to Special Elite Task (S.E.T) organization. This organization consists of many groups of soldiers, such as U.S. Army Rangers, Airborne, S.A.S, etc. This group is very diverse and is the largest ethnic organization.

There are 4 parts to heroes 7.

Heroes 7 part 1 (outside the city and inside the city)

Heroes 7 part 2 "The Great Escape" (Prison)

Heroes 7 part 3 "Fall of Man" (Part prequel, part sequel, outskirt of city to inside of city)

Heroes 7 part 4 "Endgame" (You have to wait and see)

I have improved on my mapping skills and scripting skills. So in part 1, it's not great. Part 2 is better, part 3 is awesome. Part 4 should be the greatest of all parts. It's the endgame, so there should be a big bang to finishing the storyline.

Heroes 7 is about 7 characters trying to save the world. There are 8 but 1 of them(the leader) is killed tragically and you will found out in part 3.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Unvieled by Kotaku
So Kotaku have been spilling the beans on MW3 so far so if you don't want to know about the game look away now!

The plot, as described, seems to be keeping with developer Infinity Ward's habit of delivering complex, short sequences punctuated by lots of gunfire and scene changes. The game also has players take control of several vehicles, returning gamers to the AC-130 gunship as a gunner and plopping them down in a tank as part of a U.S. Armored Division.

The Modern Warfare 3 Files: Exclusive First Details on the Biggest Game of 2011The single-player campaign, which appears to wrap up most of the unanswered questions and character fates of the first two Modern Warfare titles, also introduces new characters who appear to be destined for future Modern Warfare games, especially two Delta Force operatives codenamed "Frost" and "Sandman".

Multiplayer in the game returns with a chunky list of playable maps as well as two types of Spec Ops modes: "Survival" and "Mission".

Activision, the series' publisher, still hasn't officially unveiled any details about the game, though executives have said that a new Call of Duty game was coming this year. Last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops, developed by Treyarch, sold more than 7 million copies in the first 24 hours and within six weeks reached $1 billion in sales.

Just a quick update from my last news post to you all.


Okay, so not a whole lot of progress has been made yet with the bugs as far as I know. But the tech team are aware, as evidence by that network wide news article a few days back.

But I feel that some of you may have missed a bit of info from the last news post I made, so here it is again. Files are being halted until the bugs are fixed. I would have thought that users would have taken that as a hint and kept ahold of their files until everything was fixed instead of uploading and hoping for the best.
Communication lines were crossed somewhere.

Proably my fault. Always is. frown

Anyway, during the "unintentional break" this is your chance to give me feedback on how the latest files (5 in the queue now) should be hosted until everything is back up and running properly.

Keep it clean. Post in the comments below your ideas.

Jedi Knight III: Site Update: Staffing, Screenies! Also - New Official Email Address coming soon!

Just a quick update on the site and staffing situation here. As you may have noticed, Both Dretzel and Averus have recently rejoined the team, so welcome back guys! Computernerd, who already does excellent work moderating the FileFront forums has also joined the team and will be doing some reviews, so I would like to officially welcome him to the team as well! (Sorry its a bit late man! xD)

I have also finally gotten around to updating the site staff page, though not all the staffers have full profiles yet, you can click on the staffers names to see the profiles for those that have them, dont forget to check it out!

We are also still working on trying to get screenshots up for all files on which they are broken by using the HTML method suggested by Maveritchell of StarWarsBattlefront2Files. This involves a portion of HTML code being pasted at the bottom of the review which basically looks like the ordinary screenshots section (which is currently not working) and uploading the screenshots manually to a third party website (I use Photobucket for example) and pasting the links to the screenies into the HTML code to make them display in the 'fake' screenshots section. Unfortunately this is a rather time consuming and tedious process to carry out, so its taking a while to make sure all the files get their screenshots, but we are working on it!

If Possible, for the mean time, if you are submitting a file to us, please could you include any screenshots you wish to use in a separate folder in your .zip file! As it Is currently we have to copy/paste and then save each of the screenshots that are submitted with the file manually and then upload them to a third party site to use them.

Unfortunately sometimes we forget to save them before hand (not that often, but it has happened, I will try and make sure all the staff remember to save them and send them to me!) and once the file has been approved the screenshots are lost. If you include your screenies in a folder in the .zip file it means we can skip that whole process and simply upload them straight to Photobucket or wherever and will make it a lot quicker for us! Not to mention I can save them for when the screenshot bug hopefully gets fixed and then I can re-upload them all properly!

Lastly, I am aware that we do not have any official channel of communication at the moment, as our old site email address, team@jk2files.com has not worked in some time. Most emails have been coming directly to my own personal email address, and that gets lots of emails from all over the web such as newsletters of various kinds and so on, and emails submitted about JKFiles sometimes get lost in there! If you have not received a reply to an email you sent me within a couple of weeks this may have been what happened. If that is the case then I must apologise for any inconvenience and feel free to send another email and I will try and catch it!

The latest news is that we will soon be getting dedicated site email addresses again though. Once we get these new emails, I will be sure to update the submission rules page and all applicable pages with our new official email address.

Apologies again for any inconvenience and I hope this has helped keep you informed!

Jedi Knight III: Dawnbreaker Fan Fiction / RPG
Well the bugs continue to crawl through the Network, and believe me the staffers across the network are just as frustrated as you guys are, though I was glad to see Mark Burnham post a news item, which at least means that the management too are aware of the problems and want to get them fixed too.

But even in these dark times, there are still flashes of brightness. As you may be a ware, a little while ago a full on RPG/Fan Fiction broke out in the Poll comments section featuring several of our regular members. This was then compiled by Garyn Dakari and now there is a ModDB page devoted to that Fanfic/RPG which you can read here:

Lord of the Rings Online: Europe Servers Have Been Migrated!
Turbine have done themselves proud and within 3 days the servers are back online for those with accounts that were registered with the Codemasters client.

To complete your migration go to https://transfer.lotro.com/ and follow the instructions that you see and your migration will be at a 'pending' status, which will hopefully be complete soon.

Note that Turbine store points are taking a little while to go through but that's all part of the migration process so don't be worried if you're store points say "0" they are just taking a little bit longer, maybe an extra couple of hours.

If you have successfully migrated then I hope to see you in game (If you're on the [EN]Evernight server that is) !.

The Hillmen of Angmar have uncovered a barrow thought to have been lost for centuries. Crannog is now searching for adventurers willing to brave the tomb, rumored to be filled with wealth and riches.

Those foolish enough to become ensnared within find themselves in an ethereal dream turned to terror. If you possess a will strong enough to resist such an evil place, you may be able to make your way through the surreal labyrinth in search of freedom.

Lord of the Rings Online: Update 3: Developer Diary--Inn of the Forsaken
Jonathan Reynolds has creating an interesting dev diary about the second instance to be included in update 3, he has created some content in Moria which was a huge success, so for his point of view on the new instance which is called the 'Inn of the Forsaken' is invaluable.


Greetings Middle-earthlings! Jonathan “Donkey Slayer” Reynolds here to give you some insight into the design of the “Inn of the Forsaken” instance.

You may not have heard my name before, but you’ve probably played some of the content I’ve taken part in. For LOTRO, that content is mostly located in Moria, as my first order of business upon joining was to help flesh out the instances there. I was the primary worldbuilder (which means I built the spaces from a visual standpoint) for the majority of the instances in the original Moria launch and on one instance, Fil Gashan, I was both the worldbuilder and the content designer (which means I did the visuals as well as the gameplay design.)

Aside from that, I also built and designed the Hall of Mirrors as well as the Waterworks instances which would follow the Moria launch. After a year away from LOTRO, I have returned bearing my gift to you: The Inn of the Forsaken. This is actually the first dev diary I’ve written despite having worked at Turbine for 7 years (come May), so bear with the insane ranting that is sure to follow…

Something new

One theme that runs through most of the content I'm involved in is some level of uniqueness. Usually that manifests itself as world interaction of some sort. I feel that when you go through an instance, the space itself should be just as important (if not more so) than the monsters you are fighting or the story you are progressing through.

Interacting with the space can and should be just as compelling for the player.
This was the thought process that led to the elements that make the Inn of the Forsaken stand apart from previous content: Traps, Riddles, and Class-based Interactive Objects. Since each of these plays a significant role in the dungeon, let’s discuss each separately.

Lord of the Rings Online: Update 3: Developer Diary--The Icy Crevasse
The second dev diary featuring the second skirmish to be released in Update 3, you read a bit of it below:

loha and welcome to Forochel, the frozen icy wasteland of the North! Forochel is now home to one (of two) new skirmishes for this update -- The Icy Crevasse.

Location, location, location…

Forochel is an obvious region for us to visit. We haven’t added any Skirmishes up there yet and there’s some striking and unique landscape features to be found. This allowed us to create a visually distinct space that targets an untapped suite of slayer deeds. After the three Update 2 battle conversions we felt it was important to stick with offensive-based skirmishes this time around to get a different, fresher feel. This caused us to look for more channeled, focused areas rather than wide open ones.

When picking a location for new skirmishes, we want it to be iconic, memorable and someplace we feel hasn't reached its full potential. For Forochel, we've gravitated toward the crevasse that scars the southern section of the region. This space has great visuals, a tight channeled feel, and previously only had a horse route running through it. It also feeds into our story: A sorcerer from Angmar attempting to channel a blizzard through the crevasse and out into the waters of Evendim.

Lord of the Rings Online: Update 3: Developer Diary--Attack at Dawn
Here is the latest Dev Diary featuring the new skirmish in the North Downs called "Attack at Dawn":

Hello again, this is Bob “Maurath” Hess with a new Developer Diary. This time I will be talking about “Attack at Dawn,” the new skirmish located in Dol Dínen, in the North Downs. For reference, in our ‘Echoes of the Dead’ update I worked on the 'solofication' pass of Volume 2, was the primary designer on the Northcotton Farms instance and previously I created region content in Enedwaith’s Thror’s Coomb and the Lich Bluffs.

To give you a peek into how we brought this skirmish to life, I'll give a bit of a background on the space, an overview of the design process and then a few final notes regarding the space as a whole.


I was one of two designers asked to work on Skirmishes following the latest instance cluster. As this was the first Skirmish I had the opportunity to work on, I saw it as both a challenge and keen opportunity to learn how to work within the system. The designers and engineers who developed the Skirmish system put together a rather robust toolset that not only tailors itself to a wide array of encounters, but also streamlines the creation process.

Overview of the Design Process:
When approaching a Skirmish there are several important elements that, when combined together, lead to an interesting and memorable space. Below is a list of how we went about making the skirmish, Attack at Dawn:

Select a location
Select a theme/storyline
Create an interesting fight mechanic that makes the space feel unique
Create a compelling boss encounter which scales well with player levels

Lord of the Rings Online: Turbine Migration Announcement/Update
Only three days left until Codemasters hands over full LotrO operations to Turbine, note that you will not be able to play starting from the 31st May for about 2-3 days, you can view the announcement below:

Starting May 31st the LOTRO European servers will temporarily go down for service migration. After a short period (2-3 days) service will be restored and you can begin playing your existing characters once again. After May 31st you will no longer be able to play LOTRO in Europe until this process is complete.
