Here it is the 63rd version of the Weekly Gamefront Network News Update, the news part of the update covers the news side of the Network and the Gamefront Main site over the past week. There has been a fair bit of news from the Main site including a lot of trailers, reviews, previews and a lot more, with a lot of interesting articles this week. However you can find more news from the main Gamefront site - Here including a lot of news from the Pax 2012 East which Gamefront were present. Also I'd like to apologise for the lack of an update over the past few weeks, unfortunately a few issues have arisen during this time and i haven't had enough time to do the insider (mostly personal and work related).

We would love to hear any suggestions that you have; if you see something that you would like to be added to the Weekly Network Update, or you have any suggestions that you think may improve the Network Update then simply drop me an email at Danny[at]filefront[dot]com (please put "Network Update" as the subject though smile ).

Gamefront News: Crysis 3 Preview: Welcome to the Jungle

Crysis 1 was set in a jungle. Crysis 2 was set in a city. Crysis 3, in a neat bit of game design arithmetic, is set in a jungle city, It’s 2047, 20 years after the events of Crysis 2, and the sinister corporation Cell Industries has erected “nanodomes” over major metropolitan areas to isolate the Ceph threat. These structures function like “advanced greenhouses,” according to Crytek representative Rasmus Hojengaard, creating overnight rainforests that are supposed to cleanse the cities of pollution from within.

By setting Crysis 3 in a rainforest version of New York, Crytek are aiming for a new take on the post-apocalypse, one that goes beyond simply adding cracked masonry and foliage to an otherwise unchanged city. Hojengaard spoke of the “seven wonders of the urban rainforest” — a variety of swamps, grasslands, and canyons that are designed to be memorable, atmospheric, and closely tied to the gameplay. The studio’s trademark attention to detail is certainly apparent; tiny dragonflies and frogs make their way through the landscape, and the profusion of grasses and trees would delight even the most jaded gamer botanist.

Cell Industries claims to have contained the alien threat after the events of Crysis 2, but inside NYC’s “Liberty Dome,” the Ceph are anything but contained. Players will venture into the morass in control of “Prophet,” a recurring character whom Hojengaard described as “one of the most interesting characters in the franchise.” Prophet has seen many comrades die over the years, and now he’s taking matters into his own hands, redeeming their sacrifice through revenge and self-realization. The phrase “the hunted becomes the hunter” was repeated over and over again at EA’s San Francisco Crysis 3 showcase, and it’s clear that this mantra had an important part to play in the design process.

Gamefront News: Hands-On With Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale

On April 25, I was invited down to the Andaz Hotel in West Hollywood for a chance to preview several of Sony’s upcoming Playstation 3 games in advance of E3. What I saw indicates a bright future for fans of multiplayer and cooperative gameplay, but perhaps the biggest news to come out of the event is the long awaited reveal of PlayStation’s answer to Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. series: Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale.

Developed by Sony protege SuperBot, a second-party studio groomed in-house for this project, Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale promises a fast-paced, hilarious, and fun chance to scratch the fighting game itch without the darkness and convoluted mythology typical of the genre. It is, simply put, designed to give Playstation fans the chance to find out the answer to questions like “could Kratos kill Parappa?” I got my hands on it for a couple of hours, and lived to tell the tale.

Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale is due out this holiday season, though no specific date has been decided. I’ll need to see the finished game to determine whether or not releasing it at this late date in the Playstation 3′s life cycle, or going after the Super Smash bros. concept so long after it was invented is a good idea. Nevertheless, what I did see indicates that SuperBot might have come up with a great send-off for the PLaystation 3.

Gamefront News: Analyst Pegs GTA V For October

Grand Theft Auto V is definitely coming October 23; not only that, but Rockstar Games will likely make the announcement the day before E3 2012, and still roll like a Boss and not make even a cursory appearance at this year’s trade show.

Did I grab your attention? Good, because none of that has any basis in fact. They are the predictions of Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter, who made them during a GTTV announcement of Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale. “They’ve outgrown the show. I think they’re way too cool to go,” he said, regarding his belief that Rockstar won’t be at E3. “My read on those guys is they like stealing the thunder from everything else. So if I had to bet, I’d say you’d get an announcement on GTA V the day before E3 starts, that’d be Monday, June 4. they don’t show up and that’s all anybody can do is talk about GTA V at the show .” He then said that Rockstar will be releasing the game October 23, and that he doesn’t think they care about BioShock Infinite. So… yeah, he’s just basically talking a lot.

Pachter’s bloviating might be grounded in reality, kind of. Recently, a Rockstar employee’s CV listed October, 2012 as the game’s release window (before being removed, of course). But are we really supposed to believe they don’t care about BioShock Infinite? I get the need to have something to say about GTA V; in the nearly 6 months since the first official announcement, Rockstar has been ridiculously tight-lipped about it. Aside from that first trailer and initial PR statements, they have maddeningly refused to confirm any further details about what is sure to be the best selling game of its year. In the vacuum, our readers wondered if the trailer contained an easter egg suggesting a May, 2012 release date, and analysts have generally preferred to predict a 2013 release date.

Yes, Rockstar needs to throw us all a bone, and fast. I hope we hear something soon. But I’m getting a bit tired of speculation masquerading as analysis (except from Game Front readers, who are typically pretty good at it). While we wait for Rockstar to decide whether or not to get off the pot, let’s leave the speculation to the experts.

Gamefront News: Angry Birds Space Downloaded Over 50 Million Times

If you’re one of those folk who decided to hate Angry Birds, this story is guaranteed to ruin everything that’s good in your world. Rovio’s latest iteration of the series, Angry Birds Space, has been downloaded over 50 million times in the 35 days it’s been on sale. If you were wondering, that’s quite a lot!

The success has smashed all of Rovio’s prior sales records, and has also earned Angry Birds Space the distinction of being history’s fastest growing mobile game.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to all fans of Angry Birds everywhere,” said Rovio in a celebratory blog post. “While numbers like this certainly say something about the popularity of Angry Birds, for us the main goal is to keep creating fun new experiences that everybody can enjoy! We just launched the first free update for Angry Birds Space, with plenty more surprises in stock.”

The Angry Birds phenomenon isn’t looking to be going anywhere soon. I have no problem with that, myself, although I must confess the sheer volume of tacky merchandise surrounding the games is pretty damn embarrassing.

Gamefront News: Bethesda Reveals ‘Dawnguard’ Skyrim DLC (With No Details)

As promised, Bethesda has revealed…something…about the first piece of DLC it’ll be offering for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. See the above image.

It’s called Dawnguard, and…oh, wait. That’s all we know. As this post on the Bethesda Blog shows, there’s nothing more than the reveal image right now. Bethesda pledges that more info will be available at E3 2012, and you can bet your ass we’ll be there to check it out and ask a bunch of questions.

On the blog post, it also mentions that the DLC will be available this summer — on Xbox 360. Likely that means Bethesda has cut an exclusive deal with Microsoft for the content to hit that platform first, the same way Activision and Microsoft have a deal that brings Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 DLC and Call of Duty: Black Ops DLC to Xbox first. If that’s the case, expect about a month of lag time before Dawnguard hits Playstation 3 and PC.

Already, Xbox 360 players of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim are receiving the gift of Kinect support today, finally legitimizing the act of screaming “Fus Ro Dah” at house pets and siblings. But that’s not all Bethesda has in store for today, apparently.

The Skyrim developer’s PR Manager, Pete Hines, tweeted that it would be revealing information about the game’s first DLC offerings later today, for which we are patiently waiting. Check back here today for more information as soon as we have it. Patch files have suggested elf stuff and crossbows. Hooray!

Gamefront News: Black Ops 2 Confirmed; Due November 13

We’ve long assumed that the next game in the forever war that is the Call of Duty series would be a sequel to 2010′s megasuperduper successful Call of Duty: Black Ops. Alas, Activision has never made any official announcement but thanks to an IGN reader who got his hands on Target preorder/reservation cards – yes, they exist apparently – the game’s existence and launch date have now been confirmed.

There you go. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is due out November 13th, almost one year to the day after Modern Warfare 3. Though still not officially announced, the game has been subject to several rumors, including that unlike the original’s 1960′s setting, it will take place in the near future. We’ll presumably find out tomorrow, as Activision has been rumored to make this official May 1.

Gamefront News: Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Reveal Coming Today

Yup, it’s (mostly) confirmed: Activision will be releasing Call of Duty: Black Ops II this year, and not Call of Duty: Routine Coast Guard Patrols* or some other title.

A full “world reveal” is due later today, and ahead of that announcement, somebody got a little trigger-happy and launched a website that spills beans all over the place. The site, located here, is down now, but not before VG247 and the rest of the Internet managed to snag a bunch of photos of Call of Duty with its pants down. Er….

From what we can tell out ahead of the actual reveal, Black Ops II seems to concern Los Angeles — on fire. Rumor has it that Blops Deuce will take place in a near-future timeline, something like 10 years in the future, rather than during the Cold War. Because running two shooters in the same era in parallel timelines sounds like a great idea, Activision. Oh, also, the previously rumored release date of Nov. 13 seems to be spot-on.

Gamefront News: Cryptic Studios Spills Details On Security Breach

Last night, we reported that Cryptic Studios games Star Trek Online and Champions Online had experienced an unspecified breach of user accounts. In their initial announcement, given via an email to customers potentially affected by the breach, few details were provided. We followed up with them and were directed by Cryptic Studios rep to a web page they established late last night which provides far more information about the situation.

The breach occurred in December, 2010, and affected the following user data: account names, handles, and encrypted passwords. The breach was only just discovered due to “increased security analysis”. Though all passwords are encrypted, Cryptic has discovered evidence that several passwords were actually cracked, which means user accounts were accessed. As a result, all users who may have been affected have had their passwords reset. Cryptic is, for now, reporting that there isn’t any evidence that anything more serious than names, handles, and encrypted passwords were nabbed. However, their investigation is ongoing. Affected users should obviously check their financial statements to be certain they haven’t been compromised outside of the games in question.

Gamefront News: Crytek Bemoans Piracy

Speaking to PC Gamer’s Tom Francis at the San Francisco Crysis event we covered last week, Senior Creative Director Rasmus Højengaard was asked whether Crytek was considering extra anti-piracy measures, in light of how much Crysis 2 was pirated last time out. Here is his response:

“I can’t say. It’s unfortunate that you don’t win any awards for most downloaded game. But yeah, obviously it’s something we’d like to address. Certainly people apparently really want to play our games, they just don’t wanna buy them. So we’ll do what we can, but whatever that’s gonna be is hard to say yet.”

Højengaard may be right, but there’s an alternative explanation: since gamers often pirate titles they’re unsure about, is it possible that people were just on the fence about Crysis 2, and decided to take the mouse-finger discount rather than pay full price for a potentially disappointing game?

Regardless of the reason, let’s hope that Crytek doesn’t do anything rash with Crysis 3. Developer opinions on the piracy issue range from the sensible to the silly, but one thing is consistent: nothing can ruin a game like over-aggressive DRM.

Gamefront News: Diablo 3 Beta Peaked at 300,000 Concurrent Players

Diablo 3′s open beta weekend — which you missed if this is the first you’ve heard of it — peaked at 300,000 users playing simultaneously, according to Blizzard Community Manager Bashiok.

Bashiok revealed the approximate figure via Twitter, but had no idea how many total users played over the course of the weekend. He said:

Game Front’s Ben Richardson played the beta this weekend and compared it to his playthrough of the closed beta back in September, offering a unique perspective on the changes made to the game between then and now. Hopefully his framerate drops were growing pains for the new servers and will disappear by launch, otherwise I foresee an angry community.

Gamefront News: DICE: ’12 To 18 Months Of Value’ For Battlefield 3

Speaking to VG 24/7, temporary DICE CEO Patrick Bach discussed the company’s ambitious plans to give Battlefield 3 players a lengthy relationship with the game. Saying that support could extend into 2013, he said “We make sure that if you’re a Battlefield player, there should be plenty of Battlefield for you to spend your days on. And again, we are focusing on giving you 12-18 months of value for Battlefield 3 and the expansion packs we’re releasing.”

That’s a lot of effort, even if, as VG 24/7 notes, this only refers to patches and other scheduled updates. Especially as they still haven’t confirmed whether or not they’re working on Battlefield 4. “Right now,” Bach said, “we haven’t had that planned out yet. Depending on what happens, we’ll change things and add to it. We’re very keen on listening to the community and we read all the forums and posts, we make sure we implement any changes that need to be implemented and of course validate through data.”

This effort toward supporting BF3 might be why DICE won’t be working on the next Medal of Honor game, save sharing “the odd tips and tricks” for the Frostbite 2 engine. The engine debuted to great acclaim in BF3 and is being used by Danger Close for Medal of Honor: Warfighter, which launches in October.

Gamefront News: Digital Storm Introducing Ivy Bridge to its Gaming Rigs

Digital Storm recently debuted its Marauder line of gaming PCs, an affordable range of rigs with solid processing power. The company today announced that, moving forward, it will be outfitting its gaming PCs and laptops with Intel’s recently-released 3rd generation Ivy Bridge processors. With the addition of 3D Tri-Gate transistors and a 22nm process, Digital Storm systems will generate less heat and deliver higher performance compared to Sandy Bridge CPUs.

Rajeev Kuruppu, Digital Storm’s Director of Product Development, said:

“We’ve tested Ivy Bridge in every one of our systems and we’ve measured extraordinary overclocks at 4.8GHz at unbelievably low temperatures across the board. With the addition of Intel’s latest chipset, our entire line of gaming PCs and laptops offer customers the utmost in computing power.”

Compared to its sandy predecessor, the Ivy Bridge sees a 5% to 15% increase in CPU performance and a 20% to 50% increase in integrated GPU performance.

Gamefront News: Former BioShock Devs Found Indie Studio

Three of the developers behind the BioShock 2 DLC pack Minerva’s Den – Steve Gaynor, Johannemann Nordhagen, and Karla Zimonova – have reemerged after leaving 2K with the founding of their own indie studio, The Fullbright Company. The new studio, based in Portland, Oregon, was founded because the Minerva’s Den team, disbanded after the completion of that DLC, found they rather liked their working relationship, and wanted to continue it on their own terms. By this point they had all moved on to other projects, but after discussion, as they put it they “bailed out of corporate game development and reformed as an indie team, to see what we can do on our own.”

The Fullbright Company’s goal at start is “simply to make a great game. A memorable experience that you’ll be drawn into, and keep thinking about after the game’s turned off, and want to come back to again someday”. What they have in mind is a departure from the work on BioShock 2: “A nonviolent game in an unfantastical locale; an experience that not many games provide, built out of techniques that only video games can employ.” We approve. However, aside from this, they’ve no further details about precisely what this means. For now, they’re working on building up the company and, presumably, securing funding. However this progresses, one thing is clear: Portlandia definitely needs to cross brand this in the next season.

Gamefront News: Free Radical Was Offered Goldeneye 2; Battlefront 3 “Was Pretty Much Done”

Before it entered administration in 2008 and was bought out by Crytek in early 2009, Free Radical was allegedly offered the opportunity to make a sequel to the N64 classic Goldeneye: 007, and had nearly completed work on a new entry in the Battlefront series.

Speaking to GamesIndustry International, Free Radical co-founder Steve Ellis discussed the opportunity the studio had to develop Goldeneye 2 with Activision:

“As you can imagine that was something that was very well-received by a lot of the staff, it was going to be a great project to work on. But as we jumped at the opportunity it suddenly disappeared. We never got a real explanation about why it disappeared. I suspect it was to do with rights about which platforms a GoldenEye sequel could be released on.

“[Activision] probably wanted it on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and then realized they’d been a bit premature with that and they could actually release it on those platforms. Things like that caused us to hold on a bit longer and perhaps not pursue other opportunities as aggressively because it really sounded like that was a possibility.”

Prior to the Activision offer, LucasArts had offered Free Radical development duties on a sequel to Battlefront before the first game was even released thanks to a relationship with then-LucasArts president Jim Ward and VP of product development Peter Hirschman that he described as the “best” the studio had seen.

Gamefront News: Guild Wars 2 Digital Copies Are Sold Out

People are excited for this Guild Wars 2 thing, I guess. Those who pre-ordered a digital copy of the game from its official website will get to enjoy entry into the beta this weekend, but if you’re late to the party getting a copy purchased, bad news: they’re gone.

ArenaNet says it has limited the number of digital copies that are available in order to make sure the game isn’t inundated with players. This way, the company is sure that it can accommodate everyone, especially with a beta coming down this weekend. The developer says that it is “likely to have capacity available after the initial crunch at the start of the weekend,” so it’s possible more sales might open up and more slots in the beta could become available. Maybe, maybe not.

Meantime, if you head out to Game Stop or Best Buy, you can still grab a pre-order and, likely, a beta pass.

Gamefront News: Halo 4 Will Have Live Action Web Series, ‘Forward Unto Dawn’

Microsoft may never see its dream of a Halo movie come to fruition, but they’re aiming for the next best thing, sort of, by funding a live action web series to promote Halo 4. The series, called ‘Forward Unto Dawn’, will air in five parts on Halo Waypoint and Machinima beginning, almost certainly, 6 weeks before the launch of Halo 4 on November 6.

No specific details about the series have been announced: Microsoft is saving them for Comic Con 2012. However, it has been confirmed that every episode will depict the impact of Master Chief on the protagonist of Forward Unto Dawn, while also providing key details about the origins of the series’ convenant war. In addition, the series is designed to bring in newbs as well as longtime fans, likely introducing people to key concepts of the series in advance of the first true sequel in 5 years. 2010′s Halo: Reach was a prequel, after all.

Then again, Microsoft probably doesn’t have to worry about bringing in the uninitiated. Halo: Reach, despite being considered slightly inferior to the main trilogy, ended up bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars in its first month and ending 2010 as the year’s 3rd best-selling game, behind that year’s Call of Duty and Madden entries. That sounds like a built in audience, but what do I know? I actually thought Psychonauts would be a huge hit.

Gamefront News: It’s Official: Nintendo Posts First Ever Annual Loss

The signs have been evident for some time. Diminished Wii Sales, their first ever quarterly earnings loss, not to mention the disappointing performance of 3DS. No wonder Nintendo lowered expectations last year, predicting they’d be posting their first ever net loss for fiscal year 2011. About those lowered expectations? Yeah, that was the right decision. Today, it became official: Nintendo has posted their first ever annual loss.

The wobbling giant reported $534.6 million losses on the $8 billion in revenue it pulled in in 2011. To put that in perspective, in 2010 they pulled in $960.5 million in profits on earnings of $12.6 billion. EEOUCH. There is a silver lining, however: Nintendo’s original forecast was much bleaker, estimating $804.3 million losses. Unfortunately, they also predicted $8.2 billion in sales. So you lose some, you lose some slightly less humiliatingly.

After the glory of the previous decade, Nintendo’s financial setbacks come as a mild surprise. The Wii remains the best selling console of the current generation with 95.85 million units sold, and the DS is the second best selling gaming device of all time, with 151.52 million total sales. However, Wii’s success was in capturing the casual gaming market, and that has changed considerably in the era of smartphones. No doubt Nintendo plans to reverse this with the upcoming Wii U, which so far looks like Nintendo going after core gamers again. We’ll find out at E3 whether or not it’s anything to shout about.

Gamefront News: Mass Effect 3 Operations Now Open to PS3 Players

People are excited for this Guild Wars 2 thing, I guess. Those who pre-ordered a digital copy of the game from its official website will get to enjoy entry into the beta this weekend, but if you’re late to the party getting a copy purchased, bad news: they’re gone.

ArenaNet says it has limited the number of digital copies that are available in order to make sure the game isn’t inundated with players. This way, the company is sure that it can accommodate everyone, especially with a beta coming down this weekend. The developer says that it is “likely to have capacity available after the initial crunch at the start of the weekend,” so it’s possible more sales might open up and more slots in the beta could become available. Maybe, maybe not.

Meantime, if you head out to Game Stop or Best Buy, you can still grab a pre-order and, likely, a beta pass.

Gamefront News: Max Payne 3 DLC, Rockstar DLC Pass Announced

Rockstar has announced their DLC plans for Max Payne 3, an they confirm that whatever the single player campaign contains, that is all players can expect. Rockstar’s entire DLC strategy is for multiplayer content only.

The first DLC pack, ‘Local Justice’ will be available for download in JUne, just a few weeks after the release of Max Payne 3. It will include the Police Precinct map for Gang Wars, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Payne Killer multiplayer modes. Two other maps will also be included, each for Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Payne Killer modes, and players will get access to new precinct-themed multiplayer avatar items, multiplayer challenges, and more, to be announced content. 6 more DLC packs will follow, all multiplayer maps, with the run concluding in fall, 2012, possibly just in time for the release of Grand Theft Auto V, currently rumored to be due in late October.

In addition to the DLC schedule, Rockstar also announced the new Max Payne 3 Rockstar DLC Pass service for XBLA and PSN. Similar to the Season Pass used for Saints Row The Third, for $29.99 it gives players access to all of the DLC, a deep discount over the cost of buying them individually. Personally, I won’t be purchasing this since I don’t plan to spend the majority of my Max Payne 3 time on multiplayer. But I can report that it was a fantastic deal for SR3. So, I guess yay for those of you down for MP3 multiplayer.

Gamefront News: Microsoft Resisting Same Day Digital/Disc Releases

It’s a small thing, but annoying nonetheless: the fact that you have to wait months before a digital version of an Xbox 360 game is available for download on XBLA. I know it is at least for me – Sometimes the difference between me giving money to someone, and not giving money to someone, is my current willingness to venture out to a game retailer. Too bad for me I guess, because while Sony has recently experimented with making digital downloads on PSN available the same day a game launches in stores, Microsoft has no intention of following suit, at least for now.

“We don’t do Games on Demand on day one, we focus on boxed retail for day one,” said Xbox Live UK product manager Pav Bhardwaj to MCV. “That’s where our focus has always been and will remain that way for the foreseeable future. We release a game roughly six months after it arrives at retail at full ERP. That’s our model and we’ll be sticking to that. It’s a successful model, so why change something you don’t need to?”

“It comes down to choice,” Bhardwaj also said, referring to their model. “The customer has the choice of going to retail on day one if they really want to buy a particular title, or to wait a couple of months and buy it full price from the Xbox Live marketplace.” That’s true. It does come down to a choice. But it seems odd that they would prefer to lose a bit of money on the sale due to the retailer’s cut when they can cut them middleman out and keep the full amount. But… “It’s a successful part of our business, we’re very pleased with the growth and it continues to do really well. Clearly there’s an audience out there who are happy to purchase a product at full ERP six or so months after [its retail release].”

Gamefront News: Motorola Looks to Block Xbox 360 Imports With Patent Win

A patent dispute between Motorola and Microsoft has resulted in victory for Motorola, and it could result in an injunction that bans the import of Xbox 360s to the U.S.

The ruling comes from the U.S. International Trade Commission, which is a separate entity from the standard judicial system that rules on patent violations in the U.S. Companies often take their disputes to the ITC even before they’ve been ruled upon by a judge who can determine if one company has violated the patent of another because the ITC has the power to ban the import of products if those products infringe on patents held by a U.S. company. The idea is to protect U.S. businesses from foreign companies and their products.

In the case of Motorola, the ITC has ruled that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is in violation of four of the mobile device company’s patents, related to wireless networking and video encoding. The six-member commission also ruled that Motorola is in violation of one of Microsoft’s patents.

The result very well could be that Microsoft is banned from importing Xboxes into the U.S. from where they’re manufactured in Asia, depending on how the ITC rules. If that’s the case, Microsoft will have to alter the Xbox so that it’s no longer in violation of the patents in order to get around the injunction.

The whole situation is the result of a series of patent battles between Microsoft and Motorola. Electronics companies routinely sue each other for patent infringement, but the ruling could mean that Microsoft will have to settle with Motorola to dodge the injunction. In any case, the ITC is set to review the evidence and make a final ruling on the case on Aug. 23.

Gamefront News: NVIDIA Introduces the GTX 690

It seems as if the hype surrounding the GTX 680 (see our interview) has only just died down, but NVIDIA aren’t resting on their laurels. This weekend, they revealed the GTX 690, the 680′s dual-GPU older brother.

Clad in a variety of high-tech materials inspired by high-end automobiles, the card also uses “a pair of custom vapor chamber heat sinks” to contend with increased heat generation of the 690′s two GPU’s. NVIDIA’s Kepler architecture emphasizes efficiency, though, which means clock speeds can compete with a pair of 680′s running in SLI. The 690 also reproduces some of the 680′s new features, including Adaptive V-Sync and Fast Approximate Anti-Aliasing.

The 690 sells for $999 — enough to build an entire gaming PC — so NVIDIA’s new card isn’t for everyone. If you do have the cash on hand, though, expect to be rewarded with copious graphical power.

Gamefront News: PSA: Dustforce Level Editor Coming Tomorrow For Free

Attention, people who don’t hate great games. Indie platformer Dustforce, which we reviewed very favorably when it dropped back in January, is giving players the ability to take enjoyment of the game to a whole new level, and for free. Tomorrow, the Dustforce level editor will be made available to players via a free update, allowing them to create their own twisted stages using what appears to be a very simple interface.

Gamefront News: Racing Genre Needs New Consoles, According to Former Bizarre Creations Dev

Racing games have driven (pun half-heartedly intended) plenty of innovation in games over the years, but in today’s hyper-competitive market, can they keep up? According to former Bizarre Creations dev Gareth Wilson, racing fans will have to wait on hardware manufacturers before they can enjoy the next great racing title. Speaking to Official Xbox Magazine, Wilson had this to say:

“We need a new console…Racing games always do well when a new console comes out, and you do a new physics engine and improved graphics, but towards the end of a console cycle it’s always quite hard to push racing games, I think, because if you’ve DiRT 1 do you need DiRT 3? If you’ve got PGR3 do you need PGR4? I’m not so sure. It really relies on technology, the racing genre. Maybe more than other genres.”

Bizarre Creations has extensive experience with racing games, and Wilson’s point makes sense. Racing games can’t take advantage of deep lore or continuing stories, and the gameplay is always largely the same: go fast. New tech can help give titles the selling point they need to stand out.

There is one hole in his argument, of course. PC hardware is unaffected by console stultification, and could provide exactly the kind of new physics and improved graphics Wilson is looking for.

Gamefront News: Rumor about Bethesda Buying S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Franchise Is Bogus

No, Bethesda is not trying to acquire the IP rights to every post-apocalyptic franchise that exists in order to presumably create STALKOUT: New Wasteland. Reports from Kotaku suggested S.T.A.L.K.E.R. creator and GSC boss Sergei Grigorovich had issued a statement that claimed the rights to the series were sold to Bethesda.

However, official word from the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. folks have debunked this rumor.

A message on the official S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Facebook page states:

“There is no truth to the allegations that the Stalker rights have been sold to Bethesda. The rights belong to Sergiy Grygorovych, the founder of GSC Game World.”

The comments that sparked the rumor originally appeared on a Russian fansite and were translated via Google Translator (which we all know delivers remarkably accurate results).

The franchise remains officially dead, but it will live on through its spiritual successor Survarium.

Gamefront News: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Is Officially Dead; Reborn as Survarium

Despite showing some recent signs of life, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is officially dead. However, the team behind the game has risen from the ashes as Vostok Games and isn’t finished with the post-apocalyptic genre.

The official S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Twitter account revealed:

While the devs couldn’t find funding for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, pitching the idea of similarly-themed game set in the free-to-play online FPS world got them the backing they needed. This new project, Survarium, is set in a near-future Earth and focuses on a mass-scale ecological catastrophe.

UPDATE: The following tweet reveals that funding wasn’t the issue, but rather securing the IP rights:

Money was not the issue. We were not able to secure the IP rights and thus unable to continue development.

Gamefront News: Tribes: Ascend Has Over 800K Registered Accounts

The release of Tribes: Ascend earlier this month didn’t se tthe world on fire, exactly, but it is really good – see our review for why – and it appears to be growing in membership at a fast, or at least respectable clip. On Twitter, Gamasutra has teased an upcoming interview with Hi-Rez Studios, and according to the tweet in question, they’ve so far attracted close to one million users:

Hi-Rez Studios’ COO told us today that the F2P game Tribes: Ascend has over 800K registered accounts. Not bad! More from Hi-Rez next week…

I wonder if anyone will achieve this.

Gamefront News: Valve Announces Free Portal 2 Level Creator DLC for PC, Mac

Portal 2‘s mod tools have been available for a while now, but if you’re up for some less technical test chamber design, you’ll want to start getting excited now.

That’s because Valve has just announced the Portal 2 Perpetual Testing Initiative, a free batch of DLC that brings a level editor to the PC and Mac versions of Portal 2. As you might guess, that’ll mean that not only can you design and play your own Portal 2 test chambers, you’ll also be able to share them with other players and try out the levels designed by the rest of the community.

The DLC pack will hit Steam on May 8 and will utilize Steamworks to let users publish and share their maps. Unfortunately, the Steam forums seem to confirm that the level editor won’t support cooperative play. Hopefully Valve can make that happen sometime in the future.

Gamefront News: Worldwide Diablo 3 Launch Events Announced: Meet the Devs!

Retailers worldwide will be hosting Diablo 3 launch events, where players will be able to meet with members of the development team and get their copy of D3 signed.

In the United States, the event will take place at a Gamestop in Irvine, California, between 8pm and midnight on May 14th, and will include a variety of giveaways, hourly drawings, Diablo cosplayers, and special prizes for the first person in line. Multiple contests will offer players a chance to win exclusive D3-themed prizes, such as laser-etched desktop PCs from Intel.

International cities hosting events include Berlin, London, Moscow, Paris, Stockholm, Warsaw, Taipei, Singapore, Bangkok, and Seoul. No love for Canada, it seems.

Gamefront News: WoW Launches Item Restoration Service

Oh crap — you’ve just accidentally sold your priceless item to vendor. Your eyes grow wide; you let out a quick gasp. Your stomach begins to twist itself into a knot, and you open your mouth to scream, but only a squeak comes out.

Thankfully, as long as you limit your screw-ups to no more than once a month, accidentally selling, disenchanting, or destroying an item no longer has to be a traumatizing experience. Starting today, World of Warcraft players can access a new system that will allow them to recover these items by filling out a simple web form.

Active World of Warcraft accounts in good standing (not locked or banned) may use the item restoration web form once every 30 days, and in most cases will get the lost item back immediately.

Gamefront News: X-Play’s Adam Sessler Leaves G4; Departure Rumored to Be “Not Amicable”

Long-time X-Play co-host Adam Sessler is parting ways with G4, and rumor has it that his departure was not on good terms. In many ways, Sessler was X-Play, having been with the show since its 1998 debut. Today will mark his final appearance on the gaming TV program.

A statement from Sessler’s representative reads:

Television personality Adam Sessler and TV network G4 are parting ways, with Adam’s last episode as host of G4′s “X-Play” airing on the network today, Wednesday, April 25. Adam has been hosting the show since it first aired as ZDTV’s “Gamespot TV” in July 1998 and he also served as Editor In Chief of games content at G4. His current projects include starring as himself in the Summer 2012 movie “noobz” and consulting with a film production company on theatrical feature adaptations of video games. Adam intends to stay in front of the camera and continue as a key voice within the games industry. He also sings and is available for weddings and bar mitzvahs.

According to Kotaku, Sessler is leaving due to a contractual dispute, and the departure was not on amicable terms.

We wish Sessler well on his future projects.

Diablo 3: Blizzard Release Class Skill Videos.

As we get closer to the final release of Diablo 3, Blizzard is making more information available for those of us who weren’t selected to participate in the closed beta. Today, they posted 10 new videos to Battle.net showing off some of the skills different classes will have. Some are run of the mill, but the Demon Hunter’s Fan of Knives, my personal favorite from last summer’s hands-on, still looks amazing. The full list of videos are:

The game was relased in February 2002 in europe (in Janurary 2002 in north America) so Medal of Honor Allied Assault is a ten years old game now.
It's still the best game ever made on the earth, don't you agree ?
