Today i found a rather shocking article about Grand theft auto 3, read below to see what kind of shocking news the world of grand theft auto has to bring:-
Quote:
The Asahi Shimbun
YOKOHAMA-A hugely popular U.S.-made videogame, ``Grand Theft Auto III,'' has been deemed so violent and gory that the Kanagawa prefectural government plans to ban it from being sold or rented to anyone under 18, officials said Monday.
It will be the first time a ``harmful'' product label has been given to any game software in this country, officials said.
It is manufactured by U.S.-based Rockstar Games.
The decision follows a recommendation Monday by a prefectural panel on child welfare that sales of the game be restricted.
Kanagawa Governor Shigefumi Matsuzawa will shortly announce the designation under the prefectural ordinance on youth protection, which will ban sales and rental of the game to anyone under 18 years of age.
Retailers will be also required to display such ``harmful'' games separately from other game titles.
In the game, a player's character shoots and kills others in acts of revenge.
It was a big hit in the United States, but it also drew criticism for allegedly inciting teens to commit random shootings, leading to at least one lawsuit against the maker and distributors.
Published and distributed in Japan by Capcom Co., the game sold 350,000 copies nationwide from September 2003 to April this year.
On May 25, Matsuzawa instructed the panel to review the software, and officials said it might ``trigger crimes.''
The Video Game Commercial Association of Japan, which comprises about 1,500 software distributors, opposed an outright ban and said it had recommended self-restraint.
It plans to step up its call on retailers not to sell games intended for adults to anyone under 18, officials said.(IHT/Asahi: May 31,2005)

I thought that was the way it was already, I know here you have to present ID when buying some games.

To me, this is a good thing. I don't think anybody can truly deny that this is a bad game (and the other*****les) in what it contains. I just hope they do a better job of enforcing this then the US has. I'm not here to start an argument (and I wont reply to such things either), but to just voice my opinion on this matter. but the one thing I don't like is this part

"but it also drew criticism for allegedly inciting teens to commit random shootings, leading to at least one lawsuit against the maker and distributors."

As true as it may be (about people saying GTA made them do it), I could never really figure out how a game could "make" someone commit crime unless it straight up tells you to, unless the really mental in which case they shouldnt be playing the game to begin with. To me, people used it as a convenient excuse to try and get away with murder. but i will say that games such as these do desensetize us to problems in the world(crime, violence, gore, etc. etc.) to the point where if we do see something bad(or even try to commit the crime), it dosent seem as bad as it should (as compared to someone whose led a more innocent life to someone whose played GTA and other violent games and watched violent TV for a big part of there life). there are a lot of reasons why crime happens with anybody (and i know of alot of them and how deep it can all go), but that would get to off topic, and im getting very close to doing that now. didnt realize i went this far. well to close it up i hope things go well in Japan at least and hopefully there isn't a ban but just a age limiter thing. well theres my 2 cents and a nickel.

Personally i think there should be a age limit, Because of idiots out there who will claim the video game made them do it... but all in all it's bull-crap.

Here in america you have to be over 18 or have a parent present to buy it...

By the way guest, why don't you register, that post was better then 75 % of the ones made by the standard member wink

The japanese have movies where young women are molested by creatures with tentacles and they think GTA3 is evil? Talk about hypocrisy.

Yes, but we have things called censorship boards which *****ign an age rating to films.

I, for one, support these kind of age limits. I don't let my cousins on my PC without me being there because of games like GTA, Postal 2 or games like Resident Evil. That doesn't mean I don't like them, infact, I love them. I just don't think thirteen year olds should be able to play them, no more do I think thirteen year olds should be able to sit down and watch a porn film.

I second that, i would never let my kids (if i had any) go on the computer alone, even with space age parental control software. sure its better then nothing but never 100% effective. And as far as the Japanese and smut goes, I don't think there hypocrites, I do believe theres groups there as well that are fighting stuff in there country too, just like us in the USA, look at all the crap we got. personally i don't like smut and will never support it, i can put up with violent games to a point, but smut, no. its indecent, immoral, dirty, etc. etc. and its a big root cause to alot of problems, but thats another story. but i think one big deal here is that this is a game from another country going into there country(its the other way around alot of the time), and what you do in this game is pretty violent and you interact with it. its you in control of alot of the violence. and on another note and some things to think about that lead to things and decision like these, remember when you were a kid and you mimicked things you've seen else where, not that watching whatever made you do it, but it put that idea in your head, and your with your little friends and you might wanna show off or you guys ruff house a little and then you remember this really cool thing you seen in this game, and you might wanna try it, because it was so cool. hopefully you can take the rest from there. sure older kids may not try this as much and people that are mature enough most likely would never get so stupid unless there mental. but a 5 year old might, i remember going to one of my friends family party once and he had his little cousin there who was like 4 or 5, and he did mimic me a little because he looked up to me, cause i was bigger and what not. so say hypothetically, i wanted to copy something cool or funny from this game cause im chilling out with my friends here with out realizing the kid was there because i didn't care or think to look, and this little kid goes and tries the same thing else where to someone or something(dosn't matter what it was, say it was bad or really bad, the point is the kid wanted to be like me). and another situation is theres really young kids here and there who do get there hands on a game like this. like for example, big brother goes out and little brother decides to play his cool console while hes away cause big brother never lets him play it when hes there, and GTA happens to be in the console and so on. now in that example the big brother should have been a little more responsible in one way or another. might be an unfair situation but it happens. and thats another problem right there, how responsible are people. ive seen alot of stupid people do some stupid and inconsiderate and irresponsible things right in front of little kids, directly or indirectly. maybe i talked to much, but this is all just something to think about, not argue with. these are reasons people in Japan use I'm sure for situations such as this topic, and why an age limit should be followed and respected. some one whose 25 or 30 (even 18) would be alot more mature and not be as inclined to doing some of these things. plus japan has there share of inner problems just like other countries, and we all know the stuff America went through with GTA, so Japan is probably trying to avoid alot of that too. wow, didn't realize i did this much, i do that sometimes tho, my mind wonders, well maybe you think its stupid for me saying all this but I'm posting it anyway, didn't type it for nothing, wasted my time typing it, so you can waste time reading it. so there. don't know if it reads good but whatever, hopefully it says something you all like. id like to type more to make sure nothing might be misunderstood but whatever, theres more then enough. see ya.

P.S. maybe ill sign up to the site, but not yet. i want to wait and see what happens with a few things first.

im only fifteen now, and when i was 11(or younger...) i bought soldier of fortune 1!
it havent affected me or given me nightmares or anything. actually gta3 was a nice child game compared to sof1 but that was only the blood(and sof1 sucked rat*****)
but i still play gta3 and im waiting for san andreas now!(gonna buy it tomorrow)
do you feel sorry for me then? or sick.... whatever....... but i agree that there should be a cencor ship and alot stricter security among those jacka**es in the stores, cuz not only are underaged kids buying violent games without knowing it, but they are smoking more often too! i know its a different issue, but still the age limits should be checked alot more and better! maybe call their parents or something...
