NYC Politicians Angered by GTA IV - From The Forums
Posted by: Datarock on 03-31-2007 @ 12:10 - Source: NY Daily News

Well, it looks like the we have people complaining about GTA IV already, despite the game not having been released yet. It would seem the trailer has caused some controversy between NYC politicians.

Thanks to the sexy gizmo over on the forums for posting this. wink
Source.

Quote:
The latest version of an ultraviolent video game will unleash its murderous mayhem on the streets of New York.

And outraged political leaders say the rampant brutality of the game, Grand Theft Auto IV, has little in common with reality.

"Setting Grand Theft Auto in the safest big city in America would be like setting Halo in Disneyland," said City Councilman Peter Vallone, chairman of the Council's Public Safety Committee.

In its first trailers released this week, Grand Theft Auto is set in a mythical city that bears a striking resemblance to New York.

As the trailer shows well-known landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Cyclone in Coney Island, a character voiceover warns: "Life is complicated. I killed people, smuggled people, sold people. Perhaps here, things will be different."

"It's despicable to glamorize violence in games like these, regardless of how far-fetched the setting may be," said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

In previous incarnations, players advanced through the game by killing cops, selling pornography to children and killing prostitutes. Details of the latest version have not been released.

"The mayor does not support any video game where you earn points for injuring or killing police officers," said Jason Post, a spokesman for Mayor Bloomberg.

He noted that auto thefts have dropped 58% since Bloomberg took office, and so far this year New York City's murder rate is down 28%.

Jim Ankner, a spokesman for Take2 Games, declined to comment yesterday. Trailers from the latest version were released on the Internet Thursday. The game hits the stores in October.

New York was also the inspiration for an earlier version of the game, under the name "Liberty City."

"We've seen games that have been set in real cities, and that has been a weird route to take. By setting it in Liberty City they can get away with that satire," said Jeff Gerstmann, an editorial director from Gamespot.com.

Feel free to discuss this here or over at the forums in this thread. Please keep it civil and on the subject please.

Strange, last time i played killing cops and prostitutes in all gta games would only get you closer to being killed by the entire police force of the city, and it wasnt necessary to complete the game. And even though i finished all 3 gta games i never had to sell pornography to minors.

i don't remember selling porno to minors in every gta game i've ever played, they never play the game, yet they complain. They must be jealous because they can't play the game cause the politics says so..

they never played the game. and i don't remember selling porn to minors. they're complaining just because they're politicians and they're trying to suck up to someone.
and it's better to kill cops in a computer game than in reality.

First of all, safest big city in the world, bull *****. Secondly, most of the violence in GTA can be avoided if you don't want to do it. You don't have to kill cops to advance through the game. The only cops that ever need to be killed to beat the game are crooked cops. It's only as violent as you make it. Third, selling porn to kids? Where the hell does this guy get his info? Fourth, the game looks cartoon for crying out loud. It's not realistic at all. You want to find a scapegoat? Use one where the violence is actually realistic instead of cartoony. Fifth, GTA has always had a strong anti-drug message, but does anyone focus on that? No, I didn't think so.

Okay, I'm sorry about the rant, but please - I'm sick of this anti-violent video game *****. I play violent games, but I'm not a raving lunatic, nor are the millions of others who also play these games.

EDIT: Please watch your language in the future. ~ Gavin1701
