Pc players stuffed again - Miscellaneous

Note this is a Network wide news item so if you wish to comment about a specific game then please say which.

After reading on CoD Files that the unreleased Call of Duty: Black Ops would have dedicated server files but that they would only be available through 1 provider I though "here we go again"
PC players are getting stuffed again with false promises by game developers.
Modern Warfare 2 was a huge MP disappointment without dedicated server files. Then came Battlefiled Bad Company 2 which does have dedicated server files but they are not public and only available to a select few server providers. Now the new Medal of Honor promises dedicated server files but MP side is being made by Dice (BC 2 developer) so I doubt those server files will be public and of course there is BattleField 3 yet another Dice game so don't expect public files for that either.

What is so important about public server files?

The public files give Clans and individuals the opportunity to host there own servers. Things have moved on from 10 years ago when going to a provider was the only viable way to host a fast game server. Today a lot of clans and individuals rent there own dedicated server box to host there own web site and game servers but now for these games you cannot do that. Instead the game publishers have taken that option away from you and given it as a monopoly to a small handful of server providers.
This action on its own hurts gaming and smaller game server providers who simply cannot compete but this also takes away the freedom of choice from all of us. Basically if you want to own a server you have no option to but use the providers that the game publisher says you have to.

What about Lan Parties ?

Sorry but no they are not possible without the use of a dedicated server files. The days when friends could meet up and plug in to the same router and frag together in a closed environment are becoming a thing of the past. No server files means you have to connect to a dedicated server on the Internet.

Why have they done this ?

The main excuse that seems to be echoed by all is that by keeping the server files out of the public domain they keep the server free from Cheaters. Yeah right. Modern Warfare 2 and Bad Company 2 have there fair share of hackers and cheater So that worked didn't it ?
Nope it didn't
Meanwhile, Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward has begun clamping down on PC gamers who flout the rules in multiplayer contests.

On the studio's official Twitter feed, press representative Robert Bowling said that "top men" are working on efforts to stop cheating in the game.

"In fact, the Steam ban hammer is coming down on about 2,500 confirmed MW2 cheaters on PC today," he said.

And Bad Company 2 has a listed 2726 PB bans in Punkbusted.com alone.

So what is the real reason for no public server files ?

Well I cannot answer that question but I can throw a few possible ideas out there for your consideration.
1) maybe the publishers get kick backs from the server sales.
2) maybe its to stop server side mods to keep the purity of there game.
3) maybe it really is to try and stop cheaters.
What do you think ?

Then there is the new trend that is "No Mod Tools" with more and more games coming out without mod tools it is also becoming a concern. Site like this one that you are on now are there to serve modders and mappers who spend a massive amount of there free time to create something new and special to enhance the games they love.
The original Call of Duty and Battlefield 2 are still going strong because of modders and mapper who keep the games fresh for free.
With not mod tools players can no longer contribute to a game but instead have to wait for developer created DLC which in most cases you have to pay for. That said DICE did promise free DLC for BC 2 for the PC and has stuck to that.

Would it really be a bad thing to give us the server files to run our own servers ? Would it really be a bad thing to give us the tools to create our own content ?
After all it was the modders and mappers that kept your old games fresh and popular. It was Clans servers running that were personalized that catered for all the different players out there.
Keep corporate affairs out of gaming and simply create a great game. We can take it from there as we have been doing since your publishing houses were created.

Have I got it wrong ?
Do you agree with closed server files ?
