Steam Account Scam - Off Topic

This is a warning to all of you out there that use Steam to play and purchase your games.
There is a group of people out there hijacking accounts so you will need to be vigilant and read the following carefully.

So here is how they are doing it.
You get a invite to chat and when you do they will say something along the lines of "Hey check out my new group and please join it"
This seems harmelss enough and they could even be on your friends list or be part of a group that you are already in.
They will also post a link that goes to what looks like the Steam login page but it is not. DO NOT enter your login details here infact check the url and make sure it looks like this
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/ Group name here Or it looks like this

These scammers are using urls like steampowered07.something.com to trick people. They then change the password with in seconds and then the registered email so you cannoy recover your account.

If you fall foul of these low lifes then there is hope so do not dispare.
Go here straight away
and submit a support ticket as it describes to reclaim your account.
Note if your account is hijacked and it does recieve a Vac ban then there is nothing steam can do to over turn that ban.

Now before people start flaming or saying only a n00b will fall for this it can happen to anyone with just a small lapse of concentration so be careful out there.
If this has happened to you then find the url and use http://www.whois.net/ to find the host of the domain and report them to there host. Any good host will suspend the account while it is looked into. The host is usually the DNS host.

Stay safe.
FileFront Network Co-Manager.

After speaking to the support staff on Steam, If you follow the instructions in the article on how to recover a hijacked account they aim to get your account sorted out within 2 working days (usually the next working day)
This is not written in stone though but they will do there best depending on how busy they are.

If your account is hijacked in this way then let your friends know as soon as possible as the hijacker will try to pretend he is you and will try to get all your friends accounts in the same way. Communication is the key here to stop things like this spreading.

I don't understand how they can change the registered email address (and password + security question(s)) without confirming through the registered email address but somehow they DO. Years ago my old Steam account got hacked and the only email message I received was one saying that my "email address has successfully been changed" although there was no confirmation. Luckily I didn't have any games on that account so haha to them but you guys must be extremely careful and don't think they can't change anything without your approval.

STEAM act really fast in those cases, my friend had his account stolen, but was a question of contact Valve and tell what happened.

But never trust in no link passed by people that you dont know and doubt from those you know, thats the safe way in there.

NVM, all he did was just post rude messages on people's profiles... Including mine. >.< Anyway he just got kicked out of the team, and we reported them all, lol.

Remember people, if you see something suspicious, REPORT, and Steam will use the BANHAMMER OF DOOM upon those unworthy souls big grin

The point here is that they might do it to a friend of yours and use there account to get you to click links. It happens trust me.
Simple thing to do is double check urls and never input your details.

Okay, but even still, you never know. I got scammed in the past on RuneScape, and lots of my friends were scammed too. ALWAYS keep a look out for those people. Remember - Steam staff will NEVER ask you for your password or contact details. NEVER give your password to anybody, not even a friend or a relative, and that's not because they might do something, it's because their computer could be infected with a trojan or it could be a 'zombie'. Try to play with off-line life friends as much as possible.

This hijacking technique is called phishing, which plagues myspace and facebook as well. Myspace implemented a technique to reduce phishing by giving a user a warning that they were leaving the main website if the URL wasn't part of their identified domain(s). I think steam should do this too, if it doesn't already.

Once on YouTube I was happily browsing random pointless videos and THEN when I clicked back to the home page, a log on screen came up, but I was already logged on. I started to enter my username and then realised. I'd heard about this stuff before. They hack your account and post up porn on it. So I went "Nooeoewww" and refreshed the page and it was gone. I was logged on still. PHew!
If this happens to you (on any website), do what I did and you will live to see another day. Well, your account will anyway. wink

You've got a point there. Steam even stopped me from buying Empire: Total War last year... And this whole incident did nothing but increase my Steamophobia.

To be honest Steam has come a long way over the past few years and the speed in which they deal with incidents like this is great. It would be nice if the accounts were not hackable but in this case it is human error and not Steams fault.

Yep, as G said, human errors are impossible to avoid, no matter how good your automated system is, you need people to control certain things, and at times we do make mistakes stick out tongue And don't worry too much. Thousands of e-mail accounts are hacked every day, and only a handful of Steam accounts every week. Steam is in fact extremely safe, although of course, people seem to forget this whenever there's a slight outbreak of phishers and scammers xD

That's one of the main reasons why I'm not even registered in the Steam Community. First it reduces the danger of your account being hacked and second you don't get any annoying messages while playing a game.
Also, you can't just say that steam is all bad. I never had any bad experiences with it, and I now use it for more than 3 years. Steam has a great support that helps you with everything, and most important: Steam keeps your stuff up to date automatically!

Any 1 with enough sense and has been on the internet long enough will not fall for this. Phishing is rly quite common and happens on alot of applications and systems such as hotmail , facebook youtube etc etc

just check the links before u actualy enter them and think about what your typing your credentials into

this happened to me and i was able to get my account back in like 2 or 3 days. it is important to provide as much information as you can, and any steam purchases you make will be very helpful, so it's good to save that information to your computer.
